In a thrilling final where the top three swimmers were separated by just .02, Virginia undergrad Matt King and Indiana pro Zach Apple tied for the national title with a 48.44. King was out first at the 50, but Apple closed hard on the final 50 to get his hand on the wall even with King.
I hate that the attention got drawn away from Zapple in the comments. He’s got such a great feel for the water and it’ll be fun to watch that race when it all clicks for him! Keep chasing it dude!
I think it’s a good sign for things to come still going 48.4. Obviously I’m sure he’s not too happy with it, thankfully he’s got 2 years to get back to Rio form.

according to the comment i saw on this website, someone got intel from a swimmer who was on the worlds team that caeleb was suffering from numerous panic/anxiety attacks during worlds and pulled out to most likely prevent a breakdown
Doesn’t that imply that he was stressed by the level of competition?
They did a worlds preview of his Tokyo prep, and in it he talked a lot about the amount of pressure he had on him after his performances at Worlds in 17 and 19, and it was pretty clear from the little they showed, at least of some of his journaling, that he was incredibly stressed by Tokyo. He obviously held it together brilliantly, but at such a high level of competition happening so close right after Tokyo, I’d imagine it got to him. That’s just my take, could be completely off the mark, but either way I hope he’s healthy and happy.
