Zapple could be around 47.5 to put himself right in the mix in that 100 final.

I was getting so pumped about his chances from this, until he mentioned he just eats whatever. But then I realized I think that because I am nearly 10 years older than him and that he could definitely do the Lochte diet of only Big Macs in Tokyo and still do alright.

@Steve Nolan You’re only in your mid-30s? What a surprise! Band and music references aside, many of your comments have enough self-loathing that I had you pegged for someone at least a decade or two older. 🙂

lol tyvm, an old soul. I am on the record as defending ages ending in “-1/-2/-3” as early, “-4/-5/-6” are mid and “-7/-8/-9” are late. (When you’re 30 or 40 you’re just 30 or 50, no descriptor needed.)

It’s maybe my least popular take but I am holding on to my “early” thirties as much as I can.

Great interview, especially on Zach’s part. Rooting for him in Tokyo!

I’m happy for Zapple and want him to kill it in Tokyo, but I really don’t know how I feel about him signing with a sponsor right before the OGs whose tech suits he didn’t even wear at trials or in-season. He has religiously worn Mizuno suits and I’ve never seen him race in Speedo-branded anything. Regardless of which suit you like better (99% of swimmers would say a Mizuno blows Speedo away), why change something that has seemingly worked great for you and helped you get to where you are? At least psychologically, I wouldn’t be comfortable making that big of a change at this point in the season. Or, at the very least, wait until after the Olympics… Read more »

I always wonder how fast Phelps would’ve gone had he worn the best suits available. The second-best Speedo in 2007? Speedo instead of Arena or Jaked in 2009? The constantly puckering MP cap in 2016…

Zapple does well in big meets. I hope this stays true.

Yeah why is nobody mentioning ZAPPLE for gold? He’s been 46 on a relay start and improves every year flat start, and has been working on the back 50…

Coleman: very nice interview with Zack Apple. He is poised and articulate. He will represent the USA well in the pool, in the interview rooms, and (it appears) with his teammates.

Zach for the upset in the 100 free final — definitely in the realm of possibility given how crazy the history of the 100 free (men’s and women’s) have been. Like his confidence and momentum.

Great closing speed. I think if he can get himself out quicker than his usual, he’ll be right in the mix.

I feel like Miressi is similarly underrated in a “someone no one’s picking is gonna end up on the podium” sense.

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
