Both Cowgirls and Cowboys swimming and diving programs claimed victory over Air Force on Saturday afternoon at Laramie High School. The men’s squad reclaimed the Antler Helmet with a 165-135 win, while the women outscored the Falcons by a score 173-122.
The Cowboys broke Air Force’s three-year winning streak in the head-to-head series with their first dual victory over the Falcons since Nov. 2, 2013. The Wyoming men are now 1-1 on the year in dual meets.
The men dominated with nine individual race wins, and multiple swimmers claiming first in multiple events. Senior Eric Oleson took victory in the distance events with a winning time of 9:45.52 in the 1000 freestyle and 4:41.58 in the 500 freestyle. Senior Wade Nelson won all three of his individual events in the 100 backstroke (50.49), 200 backstroke (1:50.91) and the 200 individual medley (1:53.00).
Junior Jack Herron won three events in the dual as well, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:40.56), 200 butterfly (1:54.47) and the 100 freestyle (45:50). Junior Liam Holt dominated in the breaststroke events, winning the 100 and 200 with times of 56.83 and 2:04.49, respectively.
The Cowgirls were led by a solid group of upperclassmen that also notched multiple race victories. Senior Maria Harujunjuan won both of her breaststroke events with a time of 1:04.88 in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:22.89 in the 200. Senior Kelly Sheldon won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.91. Junior Samantha Burke swam a fast 50 freestyle, winning with a time of 23.89, and later won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.90. Junior Isobel Ryantouched the wall first in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 57.15.
The Cowgirls dominated in the distance races, sweeping both the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle. In the 1000, the freshman pair of Kristyn Bobka and Katelyn Blattnerfinished first and second with times of 10:47.59 and 10:50.17. Sophomore Astrid Iturbe clocked a third-place time of 10:50.67. In the 500, sophomore Talita Te Flantouched the wall first with a time of 5:06.85, followed by sophomore Daniela Luna Rocha (5:08.70) and senior Kara Guenther (5:17.70).
Sophomore Karla Contreras continues to dominate in diving, winning the 1-meter with a season-best mark of 317.78 and the 3-meter with a 305.63. She is now undefeated in 10 total events this season.
Next up for the Cowgirls’ will be their final home meet of the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m. The UW women will take on Northern Colorado at Corbett Pool.
