WPWL 2016: Netherlands and Spain Lead the Way

The Netherlands and Spain maintained the lead of Group A and B respectively, following the fifth round of  theWomen’s Water Polo World League 2016, held in various European cities on Tuesday April 12.

Despite being Group A‘s leader, the Netherlands lost to Hungary 7-9 at home in Dordrecht (1-1, 3-2, 1-3, 2-3). The Italian squad, second in the provisional ranking with 10 points, visited the French in Abbeville and crushed them 10-5 (2-2, 2-1, 3-1, 3-1).

In Group B, the Greek proved too strong for Russia and won 15-9 (2-2, 4-2, 5-1, 4-4) in Athens, while Spain easily defeated Germany 21-2 with a decisive first quarter (7-0, 5-1, 3-0, 6-1).

GROUP A:  NED 12pts (4W, 1L), ITA 10pts (3W, 2L), HUN 8pts (3W, 2L), FRA 0pt (5L)
GROUP B:  ESP 14pts (5W), RUS 9pts (3W, 2L),  GRE 7pts (2W, 3L), GER 0pt (5L)

The sixth and last round of the women’s European preliminaries will take place on May 5, 2016.
