Masato Sakai actually out-earned Cameron van der Burgh in prize money at the Singapore World Cup meet, but van der Burgh still earned the biggest cluster bonus for leading the Cluster #2 points on the men’s side.
With haze affecting the air quality in Singapore, the first night of finals were abruptly canceled. FINA still handed out prize money, though, in a complex system we tackle in more detail below.
Van der Burgh and Katinka Hosszu were the big winners of the second cluster, each nabbing $50,000 bonuses.
We’ve got the full money lists and an explanation of the Singapore prize money system below.
Singapore Prize Money Format
With day 1’s finals getting canceled due to haze, FINA awarded prize money for the night’s events based on combined results from prelims and the previous Hong Kong and Beijing World Cup meets.
We’ve sifted through all three to find the top 3 finishers in each of day 1’s events in order to keep our money lists updated.
The catch is that a swimmer had to be competing in the event in Singapore in order to earn prize money under this system. So if the best time from the three combined meets came from the Hong Kong meet, but that athlete did not compete in prelims in Singapore (or wasn’t entered in the event in the case of a timed final) that athlete does not earn prize money and we move to the next swimmer on the list.
That odd format left a few events digging very deep into results to find a third-place prize-winner. In the men’s 400 free, only 20 athletes were entered, and almost none of them had results from the previous two meets. That left the winner of the early heat as the third overall finisher at 4:15.07 – about 14 seconds behind the top two.
In the men’s 400 IM, only 10 swimmers entered, and were all slated to swim in a timed finals heat at night. With none of them putting up times in Singapore, only two had previous World Cup results in the second cluster, leaving the third-place prize money unclaimed.
We did our best to pore over all of the results, but this is a complicated system made more complicated by the canceled finals session. We’ve published the top 3 finishers that we could find below, and our money lists reflect these results. If you see a mistake, or a swim we missed, let us know in the comments section.
