Columbia hosted Army West Point for a men’s dual meet on Friday, November 4, grabbing a win in a 172-127 decision.
Though they would go on to lose the meet, Army kicked things off very well. In the first individual event, the 1000 free, Army went 1-2-3. Freshman Brice Barrieault led the charge, swimming a 9:23.00, followed by teammate Ian Tansill in 9:25.27, and Clayton Bernauer in 9:34.14.
Army would go on to post a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 500 free, where Barrieault won again with a 4:34.94. He swam a fantastic race, splitting 2:17.32 on the first 250, then coming home in 2:17.62. Army’s Wes Tate took second in 4:36.16, while Tansill clocked a 4:37.40 for third. Finishing fourth was Bernauer with a 4:39.27, though he had to swim exhibition (not for points) as the fourth-place Army swimmer.
Columbia’s Kyle Won was a double event winner on the day, starting off with a win in the 200 free. Won clocked a 1:39.23, pulling ahead of the field on the final 50 to finish as the only swimmer under 1:40. He would then go on to take the 200 back in 1:47.57. This time, Won established the early lead, flipping at the 100-yard mark over a second ahead of the next-closest swimmer, and held on to his lead through the back half.
Columbia’s Demirkan Demir swept the breaststroke events, beginning with a 54.88 in the 100 breast. He swam a tightly-split race, going 26.35 on the first 50, then coming home in 28.53. Demir went on to win the 200 breast in 1:58.42, again splitting the race very tightly. He was out in 58.73 on the first 100, then split 29.93 and 29.76 on the final two 50s, for a 59.69 on the final 100.
Columbia earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 back, led by Stanford Li, who swam a 50.00. Isaac Beers came in second at 51.02 and Joshua Cho was third, touching in 51.11. Columbia also posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 fly. Seung Joon Ahn came in first, swimming a 1:48.51. He took the lead on the third 50, pulling away on the final 50 to finish 1.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Ray Yang (1:50.06). Columbia’s Noah Czelusta was third, swimming a 1:52.23.
Czelusta would go on to win the 100 fly, swimming a 50.27.
As always, Columbia’s Jonathan Suckow was exceptional on the boards. He started out with a dominant win in 3-meter diving, finishing with a score of 434.18. Not only is that a phenomenal score, Suckow finished a stunning 123 points ahead of the runner-up. Suckow also won 1-meter convincingly, scoring 402.38 points, 68 ahead of the runner-up.
Army’s Owen Harlow swept the sprint events. In the 50 free, Harlow sped to a 20.17, touching first by over half a second. He later swam a 44.59 in the 100 free for a decisive victory, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 46 seconds.
