After opening Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) competition last weekend against Virginia Tech, the NC State swimming & diving team travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete against Florida State and Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m.
“We are excited to swim against some great competition this weekend,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “It’s been a long time since NC State has been in Tallahassee. The meet is going to be outdoors, so I think the team is excited for a change in scenery.”
In its most recent meet, the State women opened the dual season with a 171-129 victory against Virginia Tech last Saturday in Blacksburg, Va., while the men fell by a final count of 185-113. Freshman Alexia Zevnik provided a standout performance on the women’s side, collecting two individual titles in the 100 (55.07) and 200-yard (2:00.45) backstroke events, respectively. In addition, she was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that took first-place honors with a time of 1:41.97.
On the men’s side, senior Ian Bishop paced the squad with two wins in the 100 (55.85) and 200-yard (2:04.15) breaststroke events and served as a catalyst for the men’s 200-yard medley relay team that finished first overall with a time of 1:29.87.
In the first CSCAA men’s poll of the 2013-14 campaign, the Wolfpack is listed 24th in the country. The Pack is one of four ACC schools listed in the rankings, as the squad is joined by Florida State (No. 10), Virginia Tech (No. 14) and UNC (17).
“Florida State is a very good opponent, as well as Georgia Tech,” Holloway said. “Florida State’s men’s team is very highly ranked. It will be a good challenge for our men to step up and take a step forward from last weekend.
“It’s going to be a good challenge for our ladies as well, to see if we can come away with a victory.”
The Seminole men own a 1-0 mark on the season, while the women’s squad owns a 3-1 ledger. Both of the Yellow Jackets squads enter Friday’s meet with a 1-1 record, respectively. Last season in Raleigh, the Pack defeated Georgia Tech on the men’s and women’s sides, while both squads fell against Florida State.
“I really just want to see us execute races better,” Holloway stated. “We need to be better mentally and tougher in our races. That is what I will be looking for this weekend.”
