Wisconsin seniors Ivy Martin and Drew teDuits have been named Big Ten Swimmers of the Week for November 18th after their big wins over Northwestern.
Martin, one of the nation’s best sprinters, earned her second-consecutive Big Ten weekly honor and her third of the season so far. She won the 100 free in 49.55 against Northwestern, plus jumped up in distance to take second in the 200 free with a 1:49.85. This is her 8th Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award.
Teduits was named Men’s Swimmer of the Week after doubling up on individual wins against Northwestern. The senior backstroker won the 100- and 200-yard distances of his prime stroke, hitting times of 48.51 and 1:45.25. He also led off the winning 200 medley relay to earn his first career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award.
Freshmen of the Week honors went to a pair of foreign imports. Illinois rookie Sam Stratford of Ontario, Canada earned the women’s award. Stratford swam three individual races against Notre Dame, taking runner-up positions in all three. She swam the 100 breast, 100 free and 100 fly – in that 100 breast, Stratford lost only to Notre Dame’s returning NCAA champ Emma Reaney.
On the men’s side, Australian first-year Lachie McLeish was honored after winning twice for Michigan State as they too dueled Notre Dame. McLeish won the 100 and 200 frees, plus added a leg on the 400 free relay that took second place.
Wisconsin picked up its third award of the week with sophomore diver Ashley Peterson, who swept the diving events against Northwestern. Meanwhile the Wildcats took the men’s diver of the week as John Andrade, a senior, won 3-meter and hit an NCAA Zone cut against Wisconsin.
