12-year old Winn Aung of the Redding Swim Team in Redding, California, broke two National Age Group Records this weekend at the Juanita Allington Memorial Senior Meet at the Clovis North Aquatics Complex in Fresno, California.
Aung’s tear began with a dismantling one of the older 11-12 boys yards record left on the books – the 200 fly.
Aung swam a 1:56.05, which broke the 1:57.62 done by Illinoisan Andrew Snabes back in 2003.
In that race, Aung split 55.34/1:00.60 en route to his record-breaking performance.
Shortly thereafter, Aung swam a 1:45.43 in the 200 yard free, which was a more narrow defeat of Matt Magness’ 2013 record of 1:45.52.
Aung’s 200 free splitting was very interesting – while he’s best known as a sprinter (he holds the 50 and 100 yard free NAG Records as a 10 & under) he’s developed some nice middle-distance endurance as well.
On that 200 free, Aung split 52.00/53.43 – about as close as most get to even-splitting a 200 yard free.
Aung now owns 7 individual National Age Group Records.
Congratulations to Winn and his family for these NAG records! Also, congratulations go out to Mark Wagner his coach and the Redding Aqua Ducks Swim Team for creating an environment that makes Winn’s amazing swims possible. Way to go Ducks!
Hi Coach Hoppe! Goooooo Ducks 😀
One quick comment, Winn Aung’s 200 fly also broke the unofficial NAG record for the 200 fly. Let me explain, similar to what FINA did with the World Junior Records, they kept records for the non-standard events starting in 2000, I think. Faster swims from before then were not records. At the same meet that Chas Morton swam the current record in the 100 Fly, he also swam a 156.4 200 fly, might be off on the tenths but is was less than 156.5. He swam in the senior division for both events. (As a side note, I won the 11-12 100 fly at that meet because he swam senior 😉 Chas was really ahead of his time. It is… Read more »
By “they kept records”, I mean US Swimming kept age group records for the “non-standard” starting in 2000 (it might have been 2001 but thought it was 2000.) Beth Botsford and Lauren Stinnett went 1-2 in the 200 back at Junior Nationals one year in the 90s when both were 12 years old. It was in the 215 range. It was not a record when they allowed records for the 200 strokes for the 11-12 age group. Not sure but I think it might be faster than Elizabeth Beisel’s official record but it would be close. Before Beisel went a 215 herself, the record was a 217.
He finally did it!
Congrats.
Mr Aung was of course in my list of possible NAG record breakers this SCY season.
He did an awesome job. How tall is he? I guess he is tall boy.
Someone must surely have a video?
