Wilton Y’s Perry and Sykes Sweep 100 Free’s on Final Night of Y Nats

2016 YMCA LONG COURSE NATIONALS

Ky-lee Perry and Hugo Sykes of the Wilton YMCA in Connecticut won the women’s and men’s 100 free, respectively, on night 5 of the YMCA Nationals in Indy.

Night five results

Perry kicked off the last session with a 56.64 to win the women’s 100, coming in after flipping at 26.69 at the 50. Sykes, meanwhile, was the only swimmer to dip under 52 seconds with a 51.62 for the victory in the men’s race.

In a very tight finish in the women’s 200 fly, Phoenixville’s Emma Seiberlich surged to finish first in 2:15.56 over Cheshire’s Brooke Perrotta (2:15.93) and Countryside’s Shannon Jelley (2:15.94). All three swimmers had very similar splits the whole way through, but Seiberlich had enough at the finish to hit the wall on top. Soundview’s Corey Gambardella, who won the 100 fly earlier in the meet, took the men’s 200 fly in 2:02.63.

Nearly breaking a Y-Nats record was Grant House of Countryside, who was 2:05.55 in the 200 IM. That was tenths off of the 2:05.13 record set in 2011 by Connor Maher. Metuchen Edisen’s Sarah Hardy utilized a strong first half to run away with the women’s race (2:20.71).

Bailey Grinter of Edwardsville and Austin Wilson of Grove City took 50 back titles– Grinter won the women’s race in 29.42, a tenth off of Lauren English’s 2004 record, while Wilson was 27.20 to take the men’s race.

The 800 free looked similar to the 1500’s– the winners were the same. Emmaline Peterson (8:51.13) took the women’s race, while Cheshire’s Karl Bishop broke a days-old record in the men’s race. Before the meet started, the men’s Y-Nats record was an 8:22.11 set by Sava Turcanu in 2011. Ross Dant, who tied for the win with Bishop in the 400 free last night, set the 800 record with his 8:17.21 split from his 1500 free (a race which Bishop ended up winning) on the first night of this meet. Tonight, Bishop (8:11.69) and Dant (8:14.15) were both under Dant’s recent record, though Bishop got the win once again.

Hickory Foundation YMCA won the women’s 400 free relay, while 2nd place Wilton got a 56.48 anchor leg from Ky-lee Perry. The Upper Main Line men, anchored by Billy Beard‘s 51.23, broke the meet record with a 3:28.78, breaking Triangle Area YMCA‘s old mark of 3:29.36.
