This week at the Texas Invite, Longhorn freshman Will Modglin threw down 20.6/44.4/1:38.9 in the 50/100/200 backstroke, all best times. After his races, Modglin was grateful to finally be using a backstroke wedge on his starts, bemoaning that in they weren’t allowed in high school swimming.

How much does the wedge help in backstroke? Makes an easier comparison to how much he improved, especially in the 50 and 100 Backstroke.
Obviously he improved a ton in the 200 IM and 200 Backstroke, which makes sense given the increased training yardage he mentioned.
.25 – .5 seconds depending on the person and generally gender. I tested this.
What isn’t said is that his previous best was with a wedge at Winter Juniors.
Eric Myers at Zionsville swim club back in Indiana where he is from did a great job. And an even better job out to his parents for raising this kid with a great head on his shoulders. Would be very interested to know how much taper they did for this meet!
this dude makes a 44.4 look effortless. just mindblowing
Should’ve gone to Cal to make real backstroke gains. 😉
cal gets an army of 45/1:40 (senior year high school times) of backstrokers and hits on 1 out of 5 of them.
Name one that didn’t hit and I’ll name one that does. Let’s see who wins
More upvotes I wanna see this happen.
NAH! The eyes of Texas are upon him — and he seems to be doing fine!
He shoots… and scores! (An obvious joke given your clear dislike towards Cal!)
