Will Licon Breaks 10-Year Old Texas Swim Center Pool Record in 200 Breast

2019 ST TXLA SPEEDO SOUTHERN SECTIONALS

University of Texas postgrad Will Licon has broken the Texas Swim Center Pool Record in the 200 meter breaststroke. Racing on Friday evening at day 2 of the 2019 Austin Sectionals meet, Licon swam a 2:08.88. That broke one of the oldest pool records still standing in Austin: Eric Shanteau‘s 2:09.97 from the 2009 Austin Grand Prix.

Comparative Splits:

50m 100m 150m 200m Total Time
Will Licon New Pool Record 29.71 32.66 33.25 33.26 2:08.88
Eric Shanteau Old Pool Record 30.14 32.88 33.65 33.30 2:09.97

That’s the third-fastest time of his career, behind only the 2:08.14 that he swam at the 2016 Olympic Trials and the 2:08.72 that he swam in finals at Summer Nationals in 2018.

That swim last summer earned him a 3rd-place finish at Nationals, which left him just-barely short of the team for Pan Pacs. The 24-year old will race at the Pan American Games instead, which run from August 6th-10th in Lima, Peru.

The time ranks Licon 15th in the world, jumping Cody Miller’s 2:08.98 from Bloomington as the fastest 200 breaststroke time by an American this year. Before Friday, his fastest time outside of a National Championship meet was a 2:09.4 at the 2017 Pro Swim Series meet in Atlanta.

Love his stroke.

Been pulling for this guy for years. I hope the next is just as good and even better than this swim!

Maybe he can help teach the other Texas swimmers how do a legal stroke and not get DQ at International meets.

You have to be able to count to two first to be able to make that two hand touch.

Loving the parity in the U.S. men’s breastroke events heading into 2020. Going to be a fun year!

Kibler 1:47.1 in finals. Rooney was with him the whole way until :29 last 50. If that comes with taper he’ll have a good one too

Jackson and Haas have split under 47.5 rolling start so more like a 310

This is all without my boi Clark Smith, and Jeff Newkirk. Not to mention young guns Kibler, Krueger, and Willenbring in the 100.

Huh! Would Texas group be able to field TWO top 8 relays at Olympics? Fun thought!

Just missed having Weber-Gale on that too. I worked 2004 NCAA’s and those guys and Auburn were impressive. Last time the meet was SCM too

You can throw in Shebat. Wyatt got him at 1:46 during warmup.

Innovation will always breed disqualifications. It’s a shame Shebat had to take this L, but at least the officials will start calling the new turn correctly in the future, even if they can’t retroactively fix this blown call.

Seriously — what was the new innovation? There’s no video of it. It apparently was called a non-simultaneous touch. How can you finesse non-simultaneous touches? What is the “new turn”?

American male breastrokers at Pan Ams might be really good. Fink and Licon in 200 and Cody and Cordes in the 100….on paper anyways!

Cordes won’t be good.

It’s hilarious how this comment section is supposed to be different than all other pro sports. This isn’t little kids soccer where everyone gets a participation trophy, these are pros. Don’t get so butt hurt over negative predictions, especially when Cordes hasn’t shown anything this year.

This is pro swimming. And this season isn’t that different for Cordes than in the past. He’s always 1:00-1:02 mid season before he rests. Most indications point to a pretty fast PanAms. I’d hardly find it wise to negatively predict the performance of perhaps the fastest American breaststroker in history.
