White Sets New National Mark as Oakville Takes Team Title

On the last night of the Canadian National Championships in Pointe-Claire, Quebec 17 year old Evan White of the Oakville Aquatic Club set a new national age group record for 15-17 year old boys of 2:01.15 on his way to winning the men’s 200 IM by almost a full five seconds. White’s time was over a second off his lifetime best of 2:02.38 heading into the meet.

White’s record was not the only national mark to be set on the evening. The Chena Swim Club boys 15-17 4 x 100 medley relay team set a new national record finishing in a time of 3:50.10. The team made up of Tim Zeng, James Dergousoff, Robert Hill and Nicolas Hernandez eclipsed the time of 3:50.66, which was the mark that the Oakville Aquatic Club set just last year.

The Oakville Aquatic Club won the meet by a large margin:

  2. Edmonton Keyano Swim Club – 5:36.5
  3. Cascade Swim Club – 506
  4. Point-Claire Swim Club – 493.5
  5. Club aquatique Montreal – 389

Oakville collected the men’s title finishing with 436.5 points while Keyano won the women’s title finishing with 356 points.

There were three new junior aged athletes who qualified for the Canadian team that will compete at the World Junior Championships in Dubai. In the women’s 200 breaststroke 16 year old Genevieve Robertson of the Guelph Marlins Aquatic Club finished in a time of 2:32.79, 16 year old James Dergousoff of the Chena Swim Club posted a time of 2:17.02 in the men’s 200 breaststroke while Peter Brothers of Island Swimming qualified in the 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:34.43.

Samantha Harding, who trains at the University of Minnesota, won the women’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:45.58. Marni Oldershaw of the Oakville Aquatic Club won the women’s 200 IM in a time of 2:15.69. Ariane Mainville of the Club aquatique Montreal won the women’s 50 freestyle in a time of 25.79. Kierra Smith of the Liquid Lightening Swim Club won the women’s 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:28.40. Nick Kostiuk of the Keyano Swim Club won the men’s 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:16.57. Kier Maitland of the Keyano Swim Club won the men’s 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:23.40.

In the 4 x 100 medley relay Club aquatique Montreal took the women’s event in a time of 4:14.34 while the Oakville Aquatic Club took the men’s event in a time of 3:47.35.
