Yesterday we reported that Notre Dame’s men’s swimming program would be suspended for a minimum of one academic year after a gambling investigation. So what now?
There’s still a lot of uncertainty, but I’m wondering what the athletes will do in response. I’m not sure how long the Notre Dame team has known about this, but the news is coming right before the start of the school year and I’m guessing many incoming athletes have already moved in and started training with the team (if the team is allowed to train at all).
For those who are senior or 5th years, this could be their last chance to compete in the NCAA with their teammates. Specifically, rising senior Chris Guiliano is coming off of his first Olympics where he won gold and silver.
Transferring may be an option, but we aren’t sure if athletes will have to sit out a year or not if they end up elsewhere. For many student-athletes, waiting an extra year to start a career isn’t be a viable option.
For incoming freshman and non-seniors, will we see redshirts? Gap years? More transfers? My guess is probably a mix of all of these, but coming so close to the beginning of the year, I’m sure many won’t get an ideal situation out of this.
Go to Berkeley Chris!
What about schools with really late starts picking up a few. Cal Poly classes don’t start for another month. ND students would be well positioned for the academic rigor and with a new head coach it could be their best chance at fixing mustang swimming🤷‍♀️
I can dream. Go mustangs!
But if outside transfer portal window, sit out penalties. Would have been helpful if the article researched those kind things.
Actually… 60 seconds of Copilot research:
Transfer portal window was March plus 45 days. Potential ineligibility if transferring out, and being part of a suspended program will not help get that waived.

Depending on how the ruling is worded, no returners would be eligible to compete immediately if they transferred anyways. There’s NCAA verbiage that says a transfer cannot be eligible to compete if they’re currently ineligible to compete at the school they’re transferring from.
The individuals should have been dealt with.. individually. But that wasn’t the point. There’s a bigger end game and it’s the shuttering of ND swim program in the wake of House vs. This isn’t the first and is just the biggest name in a list that will get larger. D1 athletics at major institutions (read: football) is done for.
Are individuals charged separately? If they are charged, what school would want them (transfer)?

Many of them may lose this year of eligibility at a minimum. Remember, this was a gambling issue and gambling is against NCAA rules. The minimum suspension for a gambling violation, per the NCAA information I have read is 1 season of eligibility. Given this appeared widespread through the program, I would expect many of them to lose eligibility over this. I’m sure the NCAA is very involved in the issue now with the school regarding the who, what, when and where of the violations.
With all that said, those I do feel sorry for are the incoming freshman who had nothing to do with this, but are being punished for what others have done. I have never been… Read more »
Athletes do not necessarily have to declare a redshirt correct? They can simply not compete and retain that eligibility?
Just thinking about what would happen if the suspension is lifted halfway through the year
Suspension lifted for gambling? What, did they all have interpreters?
