Here’s a fun race video from an event we don’t get to see very often: the 100 IM swum by American record-holding 200 IMer David Nolan.
The video, which you can watch above, comes to us courtesy of Fitter & Faster Swim Tour on Vimeo. It captures Nolan stepping up for a casual 100 IM during the Elite IM Transitions and Racing Camp in Madison, New Jersey on October 10-11.
Though Nolan is swimming with no other competition in the pool to push him (and really doesn’t appear to be pushing his speed too significantly), he still manages to crack the 50-second barrier with a time of 49.4.
In a way, this video could be a pre-cursor to something we’ll see in the post-season of the coming NCAA campaign. In the offseason, the NCAA approved the 100 IM as a possible event for conferences to add to their championship meet lineup. That means the race could start appearing in the college realm as early as this season, and some see the addition as the first step towards eventually making the 100 IM a regular part of the college swimming landscape.
When the 100 IM news broke, we put forward a list of the top 8 swimmers from the past 15 years or so who could have been great at the event in the NCAA. Nolan checked in at #2 on that list behind Vlad Morozov.
3 strokes butterfly?! Don’t see that very often…
And he definitely coasted on the freestyle.
Here’s Seliskar in 100 IM (SCM), summer 2014, no blocks and shallow pool:

Why would Seliskar compete at a pool that shallow and with no blocks? Also, it seems like a wasted use of a Carbon Flex… But you can’t complain with those premium underwaters
Manaudou could go 18/40 low and 45 in the 100 IM in yards, I’d bet. Would like to see that..
I think a perfect race by Manaudou would be 17.99
Kim- Nope, bucket turn. Completely legal.
thanks for the clarification. At their age, in a 100IM, they must finish each stroke the way they would in a race, so no flips in a 100. Apparently then, at a later date, as they age, things will change. Good to know. But, for them- at the age of 9, I’m proud of them for watching the video close enough to see the transition and realizing that it was wrong (to them…). It means they care enough about the sport and its rules. I hope as time goes by, they continue to care as much and continue to grow into the amazing swimmers you spotlight on swim swam.
Just to nitpick, looks like it’s the crossover turn. Don’t see too many elite swimmers doing bucket turns these days, usually crossover turns or the rare open or suicide turns.
as of last year Seliskar still always did open turns
My 9 year old twins both said that he would’ve been disqualified for a flip turn on his back to breast transition :/
It’s a legal turn. I don’t think your 9 year olds are qualified to officiate turns though, just saying…

The turn he uses is the cross over turn. He finishes the backstroke on his side. Then drives his head towards his opposite hip to crossover onto his chest and pushes off.
Is that really that fast? don’t think so
yes, and the kid next to murphy went 49.0!
Ryan Murphy went a 46.9 in a suit his senior year at Bolles.
