Boston, Massachusetts is one of four cities vying to be the American bidder for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, along with Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.
Above, watch as Boston promotes its people, its academia, its innovation, and its environmental consciousness as part of its bid.
I think this should be a go. I highly doubt they would do any massive restructuring too much within the city, I’m sure many of the buildings would be put just outside the city, I visited the Bird’s Nest from the 2008 Olympics and the building is actually about a 30-40 minute drive from Beijing itself, as well as the water cube. I imagine something much similar would happen here given all the history in the buildings downtown. Yes, it would make transit detestable and it would be expensive, but it would definitely put infrastructure into full gear. It would be an honor to hold, and I think some packed subways and streets with loads of security would be tolerable… Read more »
I have heard rumors about using existing buildings for many of the events, since Boston is already a sports town. Since the Olympics would be in the summer, many college facilites could probably be used, as well as the Garden and the Charles. This would eliminate the need for new buildings, and instead they could focus on improving the preexisting facilities. Just a thought.
sophizzle – that was my initial instinct too. Facilities on the campuses at Harvard, MIT are perfect as a replacement for some of the smaller venues usually built.
That’s the interesting thing about the Olympics in the United States – there’s such a massive sporting infrastructure as compared to the rest of the world that there doesn’t have to be as massive of a spend – at least on the sports facilities themselves.
Boston would need a significant transport upgrade, as do most Olympic cities.
Don’t we have better things to do in Boston than this? We can barely get everyone to work on time and build new T stations, let alone host a world event.
Who benefits from all of this? Organized labor, construction companies. Who is paying? The average taxpayer. What are the long term benefits???
Well for one, a benefit is what you just mentioned… better infrastructure, due to preparing for such an event. Otherwise, yes, there are not many and it is very expensive. But hosting has pretty much always had that issue, and is more about pride and nationalism.
I agree, for the love of Boston don’t do it!! This will destroy the history and the beauty of the city. Where are they going to put all the olympic buildings? I also am a former Bostonian and I can see this being a nightmare for transit.
Oh, look.. Doha might well be running. I wonder if they can pull off (yet another) miracle. World Cup, World Athletics, World SC Swimming.. they also recently hosted World Indoor Athletics Championships.
*Rolls eyes*
Oh no! 🙄
Please.
Cape Town yes. Paris yes. A US city yes.
But Doha. Please nooooooooo!
Enough is enough!
And why not the winter olympic games in Doha?
It sure is a scary thought… But It wouldn’t surprise me, Recent changes to rules make a Doha bid more likely to succeed. We have seen numerous governing bodies showing absolute disregard for the welfare of athletes and fans over recent years (FIFA & IAAF namely), what is so different about IOC?
Furthermore, we have seen the worlds largest singular sporting event awarded to two nations with disgraceful human rights records. The Qatar WC decision particularly – It shows how much FIFA care about the exploitation of migrant workers, the grave mistreatment and persecution of homosexuals and the ill-treatment of women. We have now also been alerted to the very real possibility that finals in Rio will be quite… Read more »
Since it was the centennial for Paris, it speaks for Paris. However, some sort of centennial norm is inappropriate in general, because otherwise we can nail up the next hosts from now on and just stop holding bidding competitions as useless.
Weather question 🙂
I know it’s hard to forecast weather for 2024, especially with climate change.
But usually in August, which US city among Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. has the best weather to host olympic games? A cool sunny weather not too hot.
Boston is usually about 26-27, San Fran is about 22, LA is 28-29, DC is 30-31. So if you’re looking for something cool, San Fran is your best bet because of it’s coastal location on the beautiful West Coast! Otherwise it’s fairly similar.
*All data based on Wikipedia averages over about 30 years.
Thanks.
I thought there would be many more differences.
I live in Massachusetts and August is the hottest month, usually about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though San Francisco is on the west coast and might seem cooler than that, not everywhere in Massachusetts is that temperature. Boston is right near The Harbor so there is constantly a cool breeze coming into the city. Boston is probably 5-10 degrees cooler than the rest of Mass.
We still don’t know if Paris will bid.
If yes, Paris has a good chance of winning.
Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020
Logically, Europe should host the 2024 olympic games.
And Paris has not hosted the olympic games since . . . 1924. It would be 100 years after.
Now France is in economic crisis for more than 6 years like most of the Euro zone.
In my opinion, if we bid, we’ll win.
If we don’t bid, a US city will win.
And if Paris wins for 2024, then a US city will win for 2028.
Dude, London had the 2012 games. Logically it should go to a North American Country next rotation because we haven’t hosted a summer Olympics since 1996.
And France hasn’t hosted the olympic games since 1924.
Cool, but since you based part of your argument off of the fact that the olympics have been in South America and Asia, and that it’s time for a continental switch, North America is next.
Um…so what? France is part of Europe. As is England. William’s point stands.
London hosted in 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, the next move should be in North America: Boston 2024. Let’s not skip North America!
they will not do an Olympic games in a city or country that is in economic crisis. it does not matter when it was hosted. if they can’t support the games then it will be moved on. 88 countries participate in the Olympic games. Jamaica has never hosted a games. why don’t they do it? because they could not afford it.
Shmith, where do you get 88? The London games had 204 participating committees. If you mean countries winning a medal, that number was 79.
