The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) announced that it will immediately look into Russian doping allegations surrounding the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games that have recently been brought to light during a CBS broadcast of 60 Minutes on Sunday.
The broadcast released information from the former director of operations of a state-run Russian doping program that was in use for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.
All information was based on recorded conversations between Grigory Rodchenkov, the director of the program and the man who ran the laboratory that handled testing for the Sochi Games, and Vitaly Stepanov.
The New York Times reported that Rodchenkov had developed a three-drug cocktail that he had provided to several Russian athletes prior to and during the Games that were part of the state-run doping program.
According to the Times it involved some of Russia’s biggest stars from the games. The CBS report indicates that four gold medallists from Sochi were part of Russia’s state-run doping initiative.
The report went on to suggest that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) interfered with the Games anti-doping program. The Times report states that Rodchenkov claims a particular FSB agent was directly involved in switching out samples which they knew were positive, since they knew which athletes were part of the program, with clean urine samples.
“WADA will probe these new allegations immediately,” WADA president Sir Craig Reedie stated in a WADA press release. “The claims made in the program offer real cause for concern, as they contain new allegations regarding attempts to subvert the anti-doping process at the Sochi Games.
