LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men’s swimming and diving team defeated Centre College (Ky.) Friday evening 163-128 while the Centre women earned a 188-92 victory in Clark King Pool. Keydet sophomore Sophie Svoboda broke two records at the meet.
The VMI 200-yard medley relay team of Zach Emerson, Jack Sheehan, Kai Green and Ryan Schmitz earned a victory in 1:38.11. Green won the 100-backstroke in 1:00.43 and the 100 fly in 53.34. Schmidt finished ahead of the pack in the 50-free in 22.12 and Sheehan won the 200-IM in 1:57.
The 200-free relay team of Green, Emerson, Jacob Smilie and Schmitz earned a victory in the last event of the evening in 1:27.62. Bridger Thurston won the 1-meter (205.70) and 3-meter (209.40) diving competitions and Emerson took second in the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
Svoboda snapped two of her own school records she set last winter in the 100 (1:08.47) and 200 (2:30.31) breaststroke, winning both events. Calle Biles captured both the 1-meter (174.70) and 3-meter (209.40) diving competitions. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Svoboda, Sarah MacDougall, Morgan Davis and Biles won in 1:44.95 and Davis was second in the 200-fly. Makenna Moore took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200 medley relay team of Olivia Bryant, Svoboda, Davis and MacDougall was also second.
VMI is off until Saturday, November 9, when the Keydets host William & Mary College at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Centre swim teams kicked off their fall break with a trip east to face Virginia Military Institute of Division I. The Colonels came away with the split, with the women’s team winning 188-92 and the men’s team losing by a score of 163-128.
To start the day, the team of Connor Foster, Maddie Hall, Annie Holmes and Peyton Patel picked up a narrow victory for the Centre women in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:56.15 to win by less than a second.
The first individual win of the day for Centre came from rookie Claire Pellegrin, who outlasted the field to win the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:58.09, winning by 13 seconds.
After winning in the opening relay, Holmes took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.72. Holmes, Emma Adkins and Cat Gleason posted a 1-2-3 finish in that race.
Another 1-2-3 finish came in the 100-yard backstroke as Chloe Grove emerged victorious with a time of 1:05.02, followed by Savannah Kingery and Martha Helsley. Kingery got a win of her own in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:20.59.
Senior Amelia Blankenbeker picked up two individual event victories, first in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:14.40, and then winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.16.
Rookie Elise Burch earned victories in both sprints, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.61 and the 100-yard freestyle in 56.53. Classmate Audrey Becker was also a multiple event winner, taking first in the 100-yard fly in 1:02.14 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.35.
Despite the loss, the men’s team had multiple individual event victories. The first win of the day for the Colonels on the men’s side came in the 1000-yard freestyle as Arthur Ensign-George won with a time of 10:30.18, taking first place by 11 seconds. Ensign-George was also the only swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle to post a time under five minutes, finishing in 4:58.55 to get the win.
In the 200-yard freestyle, rookie Henry Lang picked up the victory for the Centre men in 1:46.17. Lang also won the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 48.55, taking first place by just over 0.2 seconds to get his second win of the day.
Sophomore Max Shoyat had his usual excellent meet in the backstroke, picking up victories in both races in the meet with times of 53.27 in the 100 and 1:55.96 in the 200.
Other individual winners for the Centre men included Jimmy Kelley with a time of 2:01.15 in the 200-yard fly and Bryan Killian, who won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.04.

The Centre swim teams will remain in Lexington and will wrap up their Fall Break trip on Saturday with a dual meet against Washington College and host Washington & Lee.
