Virginia Bardach Breaks Argentine Record in 100 Fly

Virginia Bardach has broken the Argentine Record in the women’s 100 meter fly at this week’s Argentina Open Naitonal Championships.

The 24-year old swam a 1:00.93 in the 100 fly, which breaks the 2014 record of 1:01.00 done by Maria Belen Diaz in 2014. Diaz was second in the final, swum on Wednesday, in 1:01.65.

That unifies the National Records in the 100 and 200 long course fly in the hands of Bardach, with the latter event still to come in a timed final on Friday evening. Her older sister Georgina holds both records in short course meters.

Virginia Bardach’s time in the 100 fly is short of that necessary to qualify for the Olympics under the FINA “A” or “B” standard, the latter of which is 1:00.80. Her best time int he 200 fly, however, is 2:11.04, which is well under the “B” standard and should be enough to earn herself an Olympic invite even if she doesn’t improve upon it on Friday.

Other highlight swims of the meet so far:

  • Bardach also slid under the FINA “B” time in the 200 IM, when she swam a 2:18.63. She’s been a 2:13, though, which is already a FINA “A” time. She’s also won the 200 back (2:21.08) and 400 IM (4:50.80) this week.
  • Paraguay’s Benjamin Hockin swam a 1:51.68 in the men’s 200 free.
