The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has announced that its 4A Virginia Swimming & Diving Championship meet will be postponed until Friday, February 20th. The high school state championship meet was originally scheduled to take place today, Thursday, February 20th, however, the VHSL cited expected snowfall in the area to be of concern for students and staff traveling from all over the state.
The meet will be held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, where it is currently 5 degrees Farenheit. The Weather Channel currently only forecasts a very small chance of snow on Thursday and Friday, though on Friday the highs will be 22 degrees. Saturday will be above freezing for most of the day, but a “wintry mix” of precipitation could complicate travel.
Christiansburg has received just over an inch of precipitation in the last week.
This means that the state’s 4A championships will now run concurrently with the already scheduled 3A championships on Friday, with each taking up a different section of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, resulting in zero warmup lanes for the student athletes. In the past, VHSL has combined these meets into a single championship, but in their announcement, they announced that the meets will be run as two separate competitions this season.
The VHSL is already considering postponing Saturday’s 2A meet as well with more inclement weather expected over the weekend.
The Grafton boys and Jamestown girls are the defending 4A Champions.
Eastern Zone Southern Zone Sectionals is held here. Boys and girls in separate pools running concurrently. There is a small pool off to the side for swimmers to warm up/down. Having said that, this will be a zoo.
