Thursday night Indiana’s Vini Lanza added his name to the pool record board at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for the second and third times this week.
To start things off, Lanza won the 200 IM in 1:41.34, lowering Austin Staab‘s 2011 pool record which had stood at 1:41.57, though he just missed hitting the Big Ten meet record of 1:41.14 set by Kyle Whitaker of Michigan in 2014. To cap off the session Thursday, Lanza contributed a 44.86 butterfly split to Indiana’s 400 medley relay. The relay squad of Gabriel Fantoni (back – 45.17), Ian Finnerty (breast – 50.16), Lanza (fly – 44.86), and Blake Pieroni (free – 41.11) produced a final time of 3:01.30, obliterating Cal’s pool record from 2011 and Indiana’s Big Ten record from 2017. Indiana’s time also stands as the 5th-fastest 400-yard medley relay ever.
Wednesday night Lanza pulled double-duty on the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays, each of which the Hoosier men won. In the 200 medley, Lanza split a 19.98 on the butterfly, becoming the first man in Indiana’s history to crack the 20-second barrier on that leg of the relay. Hardly 30 minutes later Lanza swam third on Indiana’s 800 freestyle relay where he split a 1:33.49, contributing to an overall time of 6:11.50, another pool record.
Lanza will race the 100 butterfly prelims Friday morning.
