Olympic gold medalist and American Record holder Jack Conger finished up a weekend of racing at the 2019 Charlotte Ultra on Sunday with the prelims of the 100 freestyle, where he recorded a time of 50.04, the 2nd-fastest in the prelims. Though Conger did not return Sunday evening for finals, he still left Charlotte with two victories from Friday, where he won the 100 fly in 53.31, and the 200 free in 1:49.68.
Saturday night, Conger swam a time trial of the 100 fly, recording a time of 52.95 with a blistering 24.03 split on the first 50. The time trial comes as Conger’s 2nd-fastest swim of the season, with his best 2019 performance being 52.56 from the FINA Champions Series in Indianapolis.
After his swim Saturday night, SwimSwam caught up with Conger to talk about his swims in Charlotte and his new style of training at the University of Virginia, under the guidance of head coach Todd DeSorbo. For a more in-depth look at Conger’s training with UVA, check out this episode of Practice + Pancakes.
He is Mr.Reliable on the relays. Looking forward to seeing him go 1:45 in 2Fr
Nothing to do with Virginia, but does anyone know why Conger stopped swimming backstroke? Considering he went 1.55 in 2013? Why wasn’t that developed more? Eddie not see it ? Jack not want to do it ? Technique just go ?
Conger needs a good summer, 100fly and 200free seem to be the way for him, but if he bombs where does he start next season? 100free and fly ? Just free ? Or just fly? Hasn’t really put a world class 200fly together since 2015.
Hope he finds a 50.9 and 1.45 form for the relay again.
Didn’t he go a 154 mid in 2fly a year or two ago
Jack has really matured since coming to UVA
So he won’t need his TUE ?
I hope Jack’s taper goes well. He has to trust that his coach knows what he’s doing with his training to help him improve.
There’s a lot of competition in his best events. He’s got to swim well to stay up with Luca and the others.
Luca is the new bad better version of Jack Conger.
Let’s keep believing in Jack ….he still has some more in the tank .
I don’t remember posting this…
Luca is phenomenal. Conger is phenomenal. The guy is an Olympic gold medalist! Just appreciate both for who they are and what they’ve given to the sport.
