VIDEO INTERVIEW: Fiona Doyle Breaks Irish National Record In Prelims

Fiona Doyle made an absolute statement this morning at the 2015 CIS Championships with a wicked fast 1:05.95 100m breaststroke to break the Irish short course national record in the event.

The time broke the previous 1:06.18 mark set by Sycerika McMahon in November of 2012, making Doyle the first Irish swimmer ever under 1:06 in the 100m breaststroke.

With that swim, Doyle took the top seed heading into tonight’s finals at the CIS Championships. Doyle, swimming out of the University of Calgary, is the defending champion in the event and in her final year of CIS eligibility making this her last championships.

She’ll have to compete with both Erin Stamp and Tera Van Beilen in tonight’s finals. Both UBC swimmers were very quick this morning, yet still over a second behind Doyle’s 1:05.95.

Tonight’s finals will be swum in long course meters. Doyle is the current Irish national record holder in the long course version of the 100m breaststroke with her time of 1:07.66 that she swam at the 2013 University Games.

With a win tonight, Doyle would secure three straight wins in the 100m breaststroke at the CIS Championships.
