Eleanor Matheson has verbally committed to swim for the Virginia Tech Hokies starting in the fall of 2016. A two-time Scholastic All American, she swims with Flatiron Swimming in Boulder, Colorado, and is homeschooled.
Matheson was the women’s high point winner at 2015 Northwest LC Sectionals in Gresham, Oregon. At Summer Juniors, she went on to finish 21st and 22ndin the unusual combination of the 50 free (26.20) and the 400 IM (4:55.75), both of which are just shy of Olympic Trials times (26.19 and 4:54.99).
With freestyle range from the 50 sprint up to the mile, plus speed in the 100 fly and both the 200 and 400 IMs, Matheson’s versatility will give the Hokies a wealth of options. She is qualified for Winter Nationals in five events, Summer Juniors in six events, Winter Juniors in nine events, and Futures in all 14 races.
Matheson had a great junior year, setting new personal records in every short course and long course event. She shaved off 25 seconds in the 1650 free, 13 seconds in the 200 LC fly, and 10 seconds in the 200 LC back. In addition to swimming, she was a two-sport athlete until her junior year, competing at a national level in rock climbing/bouldering with the Boulder Rock Club climbing team.
