Vanderbilt narrowly fell to San Diego this weekend on the road, 127-104. The San Diego Torreros also overtook Oregon State with a 140-91 victory. Oregon State’s Samantha Harrison continued her trend of dominance in the distance events. She clocked a 4:59 to win the 500 and a 10:16 to win the 1000.
Vanderbilt:
San Diego, Calif. – The Vanderbilt swim team wrapped up their fall break in California with a competitive showing against the University of San Diego Toreros, but falling in a close 127-104 loss.
“It was a great experience racing today for us,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “We used a different lineup to allow us coaches to see swimmers in some different events. Racing outside is something we don’t get to do often, so it was a learning experience for us.”
The Commodores started the meet off on the right note, taking the 400 Medley Relay. Johanna Goldblatt, Kathryn Coughlin, Breanna Sapienza and Kayla Moran earned the squad valuable points swimming in at a time of 3:52.904.
VU’s competitive swimming continued on into individual races, landing podium finishes in all but one event. While Vandy couldn’t secure first place in an individual events, the Dores were jumpstarted by Carrie Bencic and Summer Brown took second and third place in the 1000 free, swimming at a 10:34.14 and 10:36.29 respectively.
The ‘Dores swam to back-to-back second place finishes in the 200 and50 freestyles. Hannah Martin, the current 200 free record holder, continued her success in the event at a time of 1:56.80.Brenda Cha, followed Martin’s performance, tying Oregon State’s McLaggan with a 24.85 in the 50.
After Alex Blankenburg’s bronze finish in the 400 IM (4:37.60), VU nabbed second and third again, this time with sophomore Sapienza (2:06.69) and junior Moran (2:07.61) in the 200 fly.
Vandy rounded off individual races with two additional second place finishes by Brown and Martin in the 100 free (53.29) and 200 back (2:08.65). And finished the meet the way they started, swimming a 3:33.51 for first place in the 400 freestyle relay.
On Oct. 24th the Dores head back out in enemy waters, taking on the Tulane Green Wave at 11:00 am CT.

San Diego:
SAN DIEGO, Calif – The Toreros Women’s Swim and Dive team defeated Vanderbilt and Oregon State in a tri-meet at the USD Sportscenter Pool on Friday. The Toreros topped Vandy 127-104 and pulled away from OSU 140-91.
Jackie and Danielle Taylor led the Toreros by placing first in two events each, totaling 36 points. Jackie took the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 free (52.54). She set the school record in both events last year.
Younger sister Danielle won the 200 free (1:53.65) in runaway fashion by besting the nearest competitor by over three seconds. The freshman also took the 200 butterfly (2:06.06).
In the 400 medley relay Sarah Reierson, Mackenna Briggs, Bri Jurries and Danielle Deiperine finished second with a combined time of 3:57.63. The Taylor sisters book-ended the 400 free relay (3:34.72). After strong performances from Liza Kuznetsova and Sarah Reierson kept the team in third through three swimmers, Jackie made a hard charge into second and finished just behind the Vandy anchor.
Kuznetsova, Briggs and M.K. Clancy all had strong collegiate debuts on Friday. Kuznetsova came in second in the 500 free (5:07.87) and fourth in the 1000 free (10:38.48). Briggs earned a fourth in the 50 free (25.02) and a fifth in 200 butterfly (2:10.95). Clancy added a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:36.02).
Other top performers include Jurries who recorded a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.17) and a fifth in the 200 free (1:58.56). Gwen Walter contributed a third in the 500 free (5:13.90) and a fifth in the 1000 free (10:38.67). Deiperine posted a 1:57.86 in the 200 free and a 2:28.06 in the breaststroke, good enough for third and fifth respectively. Reierson took third with a 2:09.72 in the 200 backstroke.
Newcomers Alexa Held and Elizabeth Petty won crucial points for the Toreros in one-meter diving competition. Held won the first event with a score of 143.25 while Petty took the next round with a 140.70. The 26 points proved to be the difference over Vanderbilt.
Tomorrow the team will be back in the pool to face UCLA.

Oregon State:
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Senior Sammy Harrison won the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events for the second consecutive meet, while senior Amani Amr and junior Czsarina Isleta won a race each to highlight action for the Oregon State swimming team in a Friday meet against San Diego and Vanderbilt.
Harrison clocked a time of 10:16.70 to grab the win in the 1,000 freestyle, winning the event by nearly 18 seconds. The Henderson, Nev. claimed her repeat victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.57, winning by a margin of eight seconds and improving upon her time of 5:01.25 on Thursday.
Amr seized her first victory of the season with a win in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall first with a time of 2:07.41. Isleta claimed her win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.99, her second win in the event this season after taking the top spot against Arizona State.
Senior Claire McLaggan took second place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.85, and was just edged by a time of 24.43 by USD’s Jackie Taylor. Junior Andrea Young rounded out top freestyle performances with a third-place finish and time of 54.03 in the 100 freestyle.
The Beavers capped off Friday’s meet with a pair of third-place finishes in relay events. The foursome of Lauren Hunter, Corrine Shigeta, Megan Lam and McLaggan clocked a time of 3:58.91 in the 400-yard medley relay, while Harrison, Constance Toulemonde, Brooke Meyer and Young finished the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:35.55.
The Oregon State swimming team returns to action with a pair of meets in Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend, opening the weekend with a dual meet at USC at 2 p.m. PT on Friday, Oct. 23. The Beavers close out the road trip with a noon PT meet against UCLA and UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 24.
