Van Mathias Talks His 2nd Place Finish in 100 Breast, First Time Swimming it at NCAA’s

2023 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In his first time competing in the event, Van Mathias took second place in the 100 breast with a time of 50.60. Mathias has historically swam the 100/200 fly and 200 IM, but for his fifth year with Indiana, he decided to switch to 50/100 free. “I just told Ray and John and Cory, I just want to go fast,” Mathias said. The 100 breast was a late addition to his event line-up, a decision made for the team. “I wanted to help the team as much as I could point wise,” he said, “and that happened to be 100 breast.”
