All University of Virginia student-athletes will be required to quarantine for 14 days before they’re able to resume daily sports activities.
The athletes will either quarantine for 14 days at home prior to their return, or, for international students, have their two-week isolation period occur once they arrive in Charlottesville. While non-international student-athletes are able to begin their quarantine upon arrival as well, the university strongly recommends it is done prior to returning.
It is expected that all staff members are subject to the same quarantine rules as the student-athletes.
Per the school, the organized return of student-athletes for training at Virginia meets current state and federal gating criteria and the NCAA Resocialization of Sports Plan. In addition to that, protocols and plans for the return of athletes has been coordinated through the UVA Health System, which has collaborated with officials at the local, state and national levels.
“Student-athletes will progress through a detailed process for their well-being, safety and the ongoing health of other student-athletes and staff,” the school said.
The testing of athletes and staff will be coordinated by the UVA Health System. A positive COVID-19 test will be reported to the athletics program’s team physicians and the Thomas Jefferson Health District of the Virginia Department of Health.
Those who test positive will then be required to carry out a 10-day isolation period, or until symptoms are gone plus three days fever-free (whichever is longer), and then be medically evaluated until cleared to resume daily sports functions.
Those who have been in close contact with someone who tests positive will also be asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days and are unable to participate in daily activities during that time.
The swimming & diving team and staff is expected to begin their quarantine period on August 12.

What are freshmen? I only know about first years.
It is either FreshUS or first years. Also the word Virginia has a root with inappropriate sexual overtone. Can we all not agree to rename The University of VIRGINia – The Place of Coolness.
Does this mean they can still “run into” recruits on campus tours? Or nah??
Are non-athletes expected to quarantine? They’ll be back soon and hard to imagine everyone staying distant.
It’s not like the home quarantine is enforceable. If some NBA guy in the bubble is going to go to strip club for “chicken wings,” you can bet some athletes aren’t going to comply. Not like they’re wearing monitored ankle bracelets. It’s just legal cover for the University and little else.
Hearing stories from all over different campuses that have returned, moving into dorms and being positive, infecting others. They just had to have that last big get together before they returned to school…For those that are lucky enough to get to go to school on campus.
And what about non athletes that live in houses with swimmers? They can’t be forced to self quarantine.
Makes sense. Quarantine for two weeks before returning to campus, and then negate that action with a college free for all lifestyle. Just stupid to even pretend like these types of actions will help.
I agree. This would make sense if the individual that goes through quarantine will be entering into a 100% covid negative environment (like New Zealand or the NBA bubble) and then have their movement restricted to that environment so as to guarantee no transmission to all individuals within, but quarantining only to have no restrictions immediately after negates all the initial effort.
In a litigious society such as ours, you just have to file some things under CYA.
A dorm is basically a cruise ship.
You could say the same for an apartment building. Should we vacate those too?
I would argue a dorm is worse for disease transmission than an apartment full of non-college students. In a college dorm typically doors are kept open during the day students mingle quite a bit in dorm rooms and in common areas. They also share bathrooms usually. When I lived in an apartment after graduating college, I never set foot in a neighbor’s apartment and there weren’t common areas other than the laundry room.
I mean, theoretically if every student/faculty/staff quarantined for 14 days, then spent the school year only interacting with members of the community, then it would work.
Reality is the schools have to weather whatever storm is going to hit the first 2 weeks, and then be done with the biggest issues surrounding this (whether that be positive tests and/or the outcry thereof).
It’s a good thing UVA athletes are not coming from all over the world/country. That could be bad.
It would be worse if Americans were going all over the world. Always great to see the U.S. and Africa as the two global hotspots.
This is pretty standard, and not just for athletes.
