Utes Defeat Vandals to Wrap Up Season

The Utes wrapped up their regular season with a 153 to 88 win over the Idaho Vandals Saturday at the UI Swim Center and took home wins in ten of thirteen events.

Utah claimed a 1-2 sweep in the 200 Medley relay, with the Ute A team (1:45.82) and B team (1:46.53) finishing first and second, respectively. Idaho’s A team was third in 1:48.83.

Vandal Christine Renzini took home a win in the 500 Free (5:07.20), just ahead of Utah’s Kat Wickham (5:08.53). Wickham‘s teammates Hailey Pabst (5:09.95) and Maryssa McArthur (5:09.96) finished third and fourth with just one one-hundredth of a second between them.

The Utes took a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 Back, with the charge led by Shayla Archer (26.68). Her teammates Eirka Nist (27.38) and Jenna Griffith (27.47) touched second and third ahead of Idaho’s Allie Magrino (27.75).

Idaho’s Laura Griffing touched first in the 50 Breast (29.53) in a close race ahead of Utah’s Stina Colleou (29.60). Third was Utah’s Jenna Marsh in 30.62.

The Utes responded with a 1-2 finish in the 100 Fly by teammates Melissa Paakh (55.99) and Petra Soininen (56.75). Following up for third was Vandal Jamie Sterbis in 57.26.

Utah’s Giuliana Gigliotti claimed first in the 50 Free (23.92) ahead of a 2-3 Idaho finish by Erica Anderson (24.20) and Sami Hendricks (24.49). Gigliotti continued on for a win in the next event, swimming to a first-place finish in the 100 Free in 51.77 and sweeping the sprint events. Her teammate Petra Soininen followed up for second in 53.66, just a few tenths ahead of Idaho’s Victoria Papke (53.99).

Ute Megan Kawaguchi took the 100 Back in 58.52 ahead of Idaho’s Allie Magrino (59.96). Utah’s Erik Nist touched third in 1:00.03.

Utah continued their winning streak with a first-place finish by Stina Colleou in the 100 Breast (1:04.31). Idaho teammates Faith Barr (1:06.55) and Laura Griffing (1:07.69) completed a sweep for second and third.

The even wins continued for the Utes with Madelynn Meisel winning the 200 Free in 1:53.83. Vandal teammates Cara Jernigan (1:55.73) and Jamie Sterbis (1:56.01) followed up for second and third, respectively.

The Utah duo of Melissa Paakh (25.57) and Shayla Archer (26.16) swept the 50 Fly for the Utes ahead of Idaho’s Sami Hendricks (26.97) and Kirah Monks (27.00).

Kylie Boyce claimed a win for the Utes in the 200 IM in 2:09.36 ahead of a 2-3 Vandal finish by teammates Victoria Papke (2:10.99) and Rachel Millet (2:11.63).

Idaho finished off the meet with a 1-2 sweep in the 200 Free relay. The Vandal A team touched in 1:36.97 ahead of the B team (1:40.73).
