SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah swimming and diving team will head to the Bay Area this weekend for meets at Cal this Thursday and Stanford on Friday.
The meet with the Golden Bears is set to begin at 5 p.m. PT with the next day’s competition vs. the Cardinal will start at 2 p.m. PT.
Utah’s women’s team is currently ranked No. 36 in the nation according to CollegeSwimming.com. Cal is ranked sixth and Stanford comes in at No. 28. On the men’s side, Cal’s is ranked No. 4 with Stanford at No. 8. Utah’s men are unranked.
UTAH NOTES
The women’s squad is coming off a loss against No. 12 USC, 138.5-112.5. The Utes captured four events against the Trojans.
Jordan Anderson took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:03.98. In the 100 fly, Jenna Marsh claimed the top spot with a time of 57.54.
Taking first place in the 200 IM was Brianna Francis with a time of 2:07.97. Taking second in the event was Anderson (2:09.17) with Isabella Kearns in third (2:14.15) and Ashlyn Karosas in fourth (2:16.35).
To finish off the meet, the team of Gillian St. John, Dorien Butter, Wayner and Rhianna Williams teamed together to take first in the 400 free with a time of 3:33.29. In second was a team of Marsh, Julienne Tadena, Hailey Pabst and Maryssa McArthur with a time of 3:38.71.
BYU RELAYS
The Utes opened the 2015-16 season against rival BYU. All events were non-scored. The meet results did not count towards the annual Deseret Duel, which is set to take place in Provo on Jan. 23, 2016.
Utah opened the season with some strong performances as the relay team of Jenna Marsh, Maddie Meisel and Jordan Anderson touched in first in the 150 fly with a time of 1:18.59.
Ben Scott, David Fraser and Kristian Kron teamed together to take first in the 150 fly on the men’s side with a time of 1:08.26.
Taking first in the 150 back was the team of Shayla Archer, Megan Kawaguchi and Hailey Pabst touching in at 1:18.49.
In the 500 free ladder, David Fraser, Daniel McArthur, Bence Kiraly and Kron finished with a time of 4:02.60 for the Utes. For the women, their team of Rhianna Williams, Darby Wayner, Jordan Anderson and Meisel took second with a time of 4:36.10.
In the 400 IM, Anderson, Wayner, Julienne Tadena and Ashlyn Karosas claimed the top spot with a time of 4:01.71. Kiraly, McArthur, Brandon Deckard and Kron took second in the men’s event with a time of 3:29.13.
The Utes grabbed second in the 400 free as the team of Dorien Butter, Gillian St. John, Rhianna Williams and Meisel clocked in with a time of 3:32.18. Taking second on the men’s side was the team of Brendan Nguyen, Sean Bloore, Kristian Almberg and Peter Kotson (3:04.43).
In the mixed 200 free, a grouping of Paul Unger, St. John, Fraser and Williams took second with a time of 1:30.59.
CAL NOTES
Cal’s women are the defending NCAA Champions, finishing with 513 points. The team recently traveled to Washington State and earned a Pac-12 pelt by a score of 299.5-131.5.
Cal’s men’s team took second at the NCAA Championships last season, finishing with 399 points. They hosted Pacific this past weekend where they came out on top, 146-106.
STANFORD NOTES
At the 2015 NCAA Championships, the women finished third and the men placed sixth.
The Cardinal women opened their fall season with a 142-119 victory over WSU this past Friday, capturing 10 events. This will be the first scored meet of the season for the men’s team
PREVIOUS MEETING
The Ute women were topped by Stanford (174-124) and Cal (186.5-109.5) last season.
Utah wins were collected by Kat Wickham in the 1,000 free (10:39.69), Stina Colleou in the 100 breast (1:04.37), Kearns in the 200 fly (2:06.20) and Meisel in the 500 free (5:06.62).
During the Cal meet, there were three first-place finishes by the Utes. Colleou took first in the both the breast events with a time of 1:03.71 in the 100 and 2:17.67 in the 200. Petra Soininen touched in first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.67.
UP NEXT
The women’s squad will host Boise State and Florida Gulf Coast on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. MT.
The men’s squad will take a break from competition until Nov. 7 when they take on UNLV.
