Men’s Results

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  – The USMMA men’s swimming & diving team won the 2019 Metropolitan Conference Championship. The Mariners scored 1,488 points to lead the pack at the ultra-competitive meet, ahead of second place TCNJ (1,413 points) and third place Rowan (1,189). It’s believed that this is the first time that Merchant Marine has won the Met Championships since 1996.

The Mariners boasted the 2019 Met Conference Rookie of the Year in freshman Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio), the Swim Coach of the Year in Sean Tedesco (for the second straight season), and the Diving Coach of the Year in Johan C. Lopez.

14 NCAA Cuts were hit by individuals during the week and four relay teams also hit qualifying times, with two of the leadoff swimmers also attaining NCAA marks. There’s likely a chance that those times can turn into invitations to the NCAA Tournament in March. More information on the NCAA invites will be available later this week. Additionally, a total of 10 Academy records were broken and first-place finishes were achieved.

Three Mariner divers – McMillan, Curry and sophomore Calvin Kim (Bellevue, Wash.) – will look to qualify for nationals through the NCAA Diving Regional Meet next weekend, March 1-2, up at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.

Women’s Results

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rowan University women’s swimming & diving team took first place at the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday.  The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.

It is the Profs’ second straight Mets title.  Rowan compiled 1,490.5 points against 17 schools.  Carlee Timmins (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) swam a winning time of 17:07.70 in the 1650 freestyle and surpassed the NCAA B cut of 17:33.72.  She also improved on her school record of 17:14.08.  Timmins was named the Swimmer of the Meet.  Coach Brad Bowser was chosen the Women’s Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Miranda Coughlan (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) took second place (51.88) in the 100 freestyle.  The 400 freestyle relay swam 3:34.36 for second place.  The free relay included Coughlan, Emily LaBenski (jr. Wenonah, NJ/Deptford Twp.), Elizabeth O’Brien (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) and Kylie Salerno (fr. Castleton, NY/Maple Hill).

In the 200 backstroke, Alex Bambrick (jr. Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) took third place (2:07.94) and Abigail Brous (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) followed fourth (2:08.77).  Jordan Jones (fr. Somerset, NJ/Homeschooled) had a third place (2:12.35) in the 200 butterfly.

Bailey Howarth (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) claimed fourth (2:24.22) in the 200 breaststroke and Emily Kopchick (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) was fifth (2:26.46).  O’Brien came in fourth (53.93) in the 100 freestyle and seventh (2:12.02) in the 200 backstroke.  LaBenski (jr. Wenonah, NJ/Deptford Twp.) took seventh (2:27.82) in the 200 breaststroke.

Salerno was seventh (54.66) in the 100 freestyle while Antonia Simunek (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Megan Miller (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) were 13th (55.56) and 15th (55.95) respectively.  Veronica Alferez (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/Elmwood Park Mem.) finished seventh (2:14.28) in the 200 butterfly followed by Gabby Gligor (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee), 10th (2:15.44) and Daria Mnich (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson), 11th (2:18.19).   Claire McKissick (jr. Ellicott City, MD/Archbishop Spalding) had an eighth place (18:30.91) in the 1650 freestyle.
