The rivalry between the US and Australia already is shaping up through night 2 of swimming competition as the US now takes over the top of the medal table after Australia led through night 1.
The US picked up its second gold in the pool as Torri Huske swam to the win in the 100 butterfly and was followed right behind by Gretchen Walsh for a 1-2 US finish. The US also won another medal tonight as Carson Foster swam to bronze in the 400 IM in his first Olympic final.
Although Australia did not win a single medal tonight, they women look to have a big night tomorrow night in the 200 freestyle as Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan enter the final as the top two seeds. Titmus is the defending champion and current World record holder after breaking O’Callaghan’s World Record at Australian Trials.
France entered the medal table after Leon Marchand‘s win in the 400 IM, setting a new Olympic Record in the process. Japan and Great Britain also picked up their first medals tonight.

Given that the US has significantly more “banked” golds (all the medley relays, both Ledecky swims) compared to Aus (W200Free, W4x200), the ultimate medal tally will probably depend on how the McKeown vs Smith/Douglass/Walsh events go. If Kaylee sweeps and the rest of the team back her up I can still see Australia topping the pool medal tally – otherwise I suspect the US just has too much depth in events and swimmers.
As much as I love cheering for Arnie I don’t see her taking KL down in the 800, especially seeing how she faded in the last lap of the 400 (compared to the WR line that is). Obviously upsets can happen in the medley relays but I… Read more »
What about Nic Fink’s silver in 100 breast? Not mentioned anywhere.
It’ll swing back to Australia tomorrow, then back to USA the next day. Then it depends on a few things
So nice to see Torri and Gretchen to win Gold and Silver! Torri had that pure joy that only happens in rare moments. Gretchen was awesome as well and should be so very proud. Some great people on the USA Swim Team!
