The American contingent at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan is bringing home multiple medals and top 10 performances. Among those are a pair of gold medals from Haley Anderson and Jordan Wilimovsky.
While the swimmers did well individually, they also excelled in the team scoring. Team USA had the highest overall team score of the World Championships.
The team scores are determined by the sum of the points for all top 12 finishes. Scoring for 1st-12th is as follows: 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
The top 3 performances by Anderson, Wilimovsky, and Alex Meyer were the bulk of the points for team USA. Anderson was the highest scorer for the women, picking up 1st in the 5km and 9th in the 10km. Meyer led the scoring for the men with 2nd in the 25 km and 11th in the 5 km.
Also scoring for the U.S. were Sean Ryan (4th, 10 km), David Heron (6th, 5 km and 10th, 25 km), Jordan Wilimovsky (1st, 10 km), Ashley Twichell (6th, 5km and 9th, 25 km), and Emily Brunemann (8th, 25 km).
Team USA was 5th in the mixed team event.
The 2nd highest score came from Italy with 99 points. They were led by Simone Ruffini who won gold in the 25 km ahead of Meyer and took 7th in the 10 km. Italy was 4th, one spot ahead of the USA in the team event.
Germany had the 3rd highest total at 94 points. They earned a big boost after winning the mixed team event. Finnia Wunram scored big for the Germans with her 3rd place finish in the 5 km and 5th place finish in the 25 km.
