LAS VEGAS – Hayden Hemmens, a senior and captain on the UNLV men’s swimming and diving team, is one of the 14 athletes selected to represent the USA at the 2019 International Surf Rescue Challenge, held in Durban, South Africa from September 28-October 2.
“I’m beyond excited to travel to South Africa because my father was born and raised there and this is where he began competing in Surf Lifesaving sports,” said Hemmens. “I’m excited to see the places that got him into the sport and the true roots of why I love the sport of surf lifesaving. Also, most importantly, I get to see my grandmother, with my father, one more time before I graduate college.”
The International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC) is a competition between Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Great Britain and Japan. It is based around three tests, which includes swim, surf board, surf ski and beach events. An overall point score will be maintained with the winner being declared the 2019 International Surf Rescue Challenge Champion.
“UNLV is really proud to have one of the top competitive lifeguards in the world representing the Unites States,” said Head Coach Ben Loorz. “We’re excited for Hayden to compete well in South Africa, and also for the sport to grow toward a potential Olympic presence in Los Angeles 2028.”
