University of Chicago Trumps Wheaton, IL

Wheaton, Ill.- The Wheaton men’s and women’s swim teams continued their opening weekend of the 2013-14 swim season with a dual meet against the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. Chicago was victorious in both meets, winning the men’s meet 147-97 and the women’s meet 130-118.

On the women’s side, Kirsty Nitz and Erin Bagley each won two events. Nitz registered top times in the 50-yard freestyle (24.22) and 200-yard backstroke (2:07.63). Bagley earned victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.17) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.54). Both times were less than a second faster than the runner-up. Carlie Herich earned top honors in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.31. Wheaton’s 400-yard medley relay team of Nitz, Bagley, Katie Deysher and Sarah Coley was victorious with a tiem of 3:59.64.

Wheaton’s men’s performance was highlighted by a dominant victory by Will McCauley in the 1000-yard freestyle. McCauley finished 11 seconds ahead of the runner-up and his time of 9:50.80 was just over a second shy of the school record in the event. Korey Clement turned in the top time in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.63 and Jacob Clement was the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.14, narrowly edging older brother Korey. Wills Francis was second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.09) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.98).

Wheaton’s next meet will be on Saturday, November 9 when the Thunder travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. for a meet at Calvin College.
