United States Wins Team Award At SC World Championships

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The American team topped the medal table in Windsor, earning them Team of the Meet honors. They led all nations with eight golds, and doubled runner-up Japan in the overall medal count with 30. American team captains Tom ShieldsCody MillerMadison KennedyAmanda Weir and Kelsi Worrell accepted the award at the end of the final session.

Finishing 2nd was Hungary, who won seven gold medals, incredibly all courtesy of Katinka Hosszu. She also won two silvers, and David Verraszto and Peter Bernek each won a bronze to give them a total of 11. Russia finished 3rd with six golds, five courtesy of the men’s relays who swept all five contested. Their other win was also a relay, coming in the mixed 4×50 free relay.

Relays were key for the Americans as well, as they were the source of half of their gold medals. The American women won the 4×100 free and both medley relays, while they also won gold in the mixed 4×50 medley. Individually they only had three gold medal winners, with Leah Smith taking two in the 400 and 800 freestyle, and Michael Andrew (100 IM) and Lilly King (50 breast) earning one each.

The biggest medal hauls on the American team came from Tom Shields and Kelsi Worrell, who each earned three silver medals in the three butterfly events along with four relay medals for a total of seven each.

Japan, who earned the second highest total medal count ultimately placed 8th due to winning 11 bronze medals out of their 15 total.
