UNCW’s Bjugan, JMU’s Gross Win Gold Medals On Day 1 Of CAA Diving Championship

NEWARK, Del. (Mar. 26, 2021) – The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming and Diving Championships commenced Friday with the men’s 1-meter dive competition and the women’s 3-meter diving event. Day one saw two individual champions crowned as UNCW’s Kolbein Bjugan won the men’s 1-meter dive while James Madison’s Emily Gross earned a first-place finish in the women’s 3-meter dive.

Men’s 1-Meter Diving
Last year’s CAA Diver of the Year, Bjugan defended his 1-meter diving title winning the event for a second straight season with a score of 306.90. Bjugan’s performance was 21.45 points better than his outing in 2020. Towson’s duo of Will Canny and Ajani Dorner rounded out the podium finishers taking second and third respectively. Canny was runner-up in the event for the second consecutive season with a performance of 278.60 while Dorner scored 254.70 finishing behind his teammate.

Women’s 3-Meter Diving
Gross became the third straight Dukes’ diver to claim the 3-meter diving title winning the event with a score of 297.90. UNCW’s Courtney Klausen finished in second place after her performance of 286.85.  James Madison’s Sarah Stim was the final podium finisher recording her second straight third-place finish with a score of 276.75.

Competition resumes tomorrow with the women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter dive prelims tomorrow set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
