North Carolina senior Stephanie Peacock has left the ACC Championships in Greensboro, NC on a stretcher after falling ill during the 1650 freestyle.
The Tar Heel was on a blistering pace in the mile, breaking her own NCAA record in the 1000 free before falling way off her groove near the end, fading from 28-second splits to a 33.5 to close the race and fall to second.
The school is unable to share further details due to medical confidentiality laws, but the UNC Swimming and Diving Twitter account did tweet shortly after the race that Peacock “fell ill” during the 1650″

No details have emerged on the specifics of the situation yet. This is the second season to be marred by a post-season health issue for Peacock; she also scratched out of last year’s ACCs and missed the subsequent NCAA Championships with an undisclosed medical condition.
She isn’t lucky.

I am really sorry about Stephanie’s illness…that is a shame knowing how hard all these students train for these big meets. I hope she feels better very quickly. As far as Rachel Naurath is concerned, I have heard that she got mono. It’s too back since this is her Senior year. Hope she feels better too. Gotta love all these kids.

Here is what Stephanie had to say about her illness in October 2013:
“Basically what it was, is when I was training I was having extreme abdominal pain every time I was in the water training. My stomach would get big and cramp up a lot. My doctors and coaches pulled me out of the water. Eventually, my doctors told me that it stemmed from a concussion I had in December, and the doctors thought it impaired parts of my brain that control breathing and swelling. Jeez, I hope not after the debacle with their new HVAC system in December. Though when I saw that she had an undisclosed medical condition last year, asthma was one of the things that did cross my mind. The mile is so tough, what a nightmare to get sick during it. Is this possibly related to air quality at the Greensboro facility? Has there been issues from anyone on deck?
Hulk Swim – one of our writers, Christine Wixted, has been on deck all weekend and hasn’t mentioned a peep about air quality. One wouldn’t expect there to be a problem, though, with a much smaller meet. As the Evacuator installers stated, and we confirmed with many folks, the air quality was immaculate the weekend before Juniors with only 900 swimmers, so I’d imagine a meet like ACC’s would have no issues.
I’ll check with Christine in the morning to confirm, but no problems that we’ve heard about.
Just talked to Christine, who said that she didn’t notice any issues with air quality all weekend.
