UMBC Set to Face Rider

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC swimming and diving teams head to Lawrenceville, N.J. for a Saturday dual meet against the Rider Broncs. The meet with the Broncs will be the first scored meet of the year, after the Retrievers swam against Bucknell last weekend.

Last Time Out:

The UMBC swimming and diving teams opened the 2015-16 season with an exhibition meet against the Bison on Saturday. Several Retrievers earned first place finishes in the non-scored meet.

For the women, the Retrievers won both relays of the day, in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. The quartet of Lauren DayEmily EscobedoAmanda Day, andKristie Langford took first in the 200 medley with a time of 1:45.97. The 400 free relay team of Hania Moro, Laura Massicotte, Catherine Frediani and Allison Atkinsontouched the wall in 3:33.53.

Individually, Moro led things off with a win in 1000 free, out-touching teammate Laura Massicotte by six seconds. Kayla Lilly took gold in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.17. Freshman Maddy Popalis picked up her first collegiate win in the 200 breast in a time of 2:28.21. Moro would sweep the distance events, winning the 500 free in just over five minutes.

The men kicked off the year with a win in the 200 medley relay. Nikola Trajkovic, Leo Endres, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein touched the wall in 1:33.60 for the win.

Rookie Felix Reichsfield was a winner in the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:39.72. Andrew McKissick also picked up a win in the 200 fly, touching in at 1:54.60.

Other Retriever winners were Luca Santinelli (200 breast), Spoerlein (200 free, 100 free, 50 free), Reichsfield (500 free), Trajkovic (200 IM, 100 IM) Adejumo (100 fly, 50 fly), Alexander Gilese (100 back, 50 back), Endres (100 breast), and Leo Mercer (50 breast).

Last Year vs. Rider:

Both UMBC men and women defeated Rider by scores of 158-125 and 156-115 respectively.

On the men’s side, UMBC took both of the relays, with a win in the 200 medley and 400 free relay. Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science), Leo Endres (Bamburg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium), Andrew Schrantz (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), and Trevor Doll (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) took the gold with a time of 1:33.86. Kaei, Doll, Gutzat, and Sporlein took a victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:09.12.

Gregor Sporlein (Bamburg, Germany/Clavius Gymnasium) was a three time winner on the day, earning first in the 200 free (1:40.60), the 50 free (21.10), and the 100 free (46.09). Luca Santinelli (Via Alfleri, Italy/Liceo Scientifico) and Miles Ruttan (Ottowa, Ontario/John McCrae)each picked up a victory on the day. Santinelli won the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.69, while Ruttan won the 200 back in a time of 1:54.36.

On the women’s end, The Retrievers took first in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Lauren Day (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), Amanda Day (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina), and Kristie Langford (Port Hope, Ontario/CDCI West) won with a time of 1:48.

Brenda Rhodes kicked things off in the individual competitions. Rhodes won the 1000 free with a time of 10:33.95. Stephanie Romano (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Towson) was the winner of the 500 free with a time of 5:10.92, out-touching Rhodes but one second.

Alissa Caulfield (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales) was a three time winner on the day. Caulfield won the 200 free (1:56.14), 50 free (24.73), and 100 free (53.33).

On The Horizon:

The Retrievers will open the home schedule against local-rival Navy on Friday, Oct. 16. The meet will kick off at 4:00 p.m. at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
