UK Paralympic Champion wins Funding Appeal

Sascha Kindred, a Paralympic swimmer from the United Kingdom, won an appeal to reinstate his funding from UK Sport. He will now have access to performance staff and programs throughout Britain.

UK Sport is an organization which promotes various sports around the country, and had cut Kindred’s funding to look towards younger athletes. Kindred is 38 years old, and has won seven Paralympic titles in his career. Athletes without funding from UK sport can still represent the UK on the international stage, but they must reach certain qualifying standards.

This summer in Rio, Kindred took Paralympic gold in the 200 meter I.M. after an emotional roller coaster that saw him disqualified, reinstated on appeal, and then bringing home gold in an IPC World Record for the SM6 class of 2:38.47.

Kindred told the BBC “I am really pleased that my appeal was heard and I have been reinstated on to the podium programme…I’m looking forward now and I’m back in training ready for a long season ahead of qualifying for the World Championships.”
