FISHERS, Ind.—In their final tune-up before the conference championships, the UIndy swimming & diving teams bested a number of Division I opponents to earn wins at the Butler Invitational Sunday. Held at the Fishers High School Natatorium in nearby Fishers, Ind., the Greyhound women racked up 1371.5 points while the men earned 1196 as both teams ended the event atop the final team standings.

The men’s field featured seven total teams and the women’s six, with Xavier and Ball State among the combatants. Nevertheless, the Greyhounds combined to win 21 of the 32 events – 12 on the men’s side, 9 on the women’s.

Six Greyhounds registered a pair of individual wins on the day, but it was newcomer Mika Heideyer that perhaps had the most notable meet. In her Greyhound debut, the freshman from Fort-de-France, Martinique twice etched her name in the school’s top 10 lists. She won the 200 free with a time of 1:49.64 and also took second in the 100 free after touching in 50.77 seconds. The results were good for fourth and ninth, respectively, in the program record book, while both were under the NCAA B cut benchmark.

Sophomore Cedric Buessing won both the 100 back and the 200 IM, making some history of his own in the latter. Already the UIndy record holder in the 400 IM, the German phenom vaulted into the top 10 in the 200 IM, recording a B-cut time of 1:49.41 to jump to ninth in school record book.

All-Americans Johanna Buys and Kaitlyn McCoy both won individual events apiece. The Greyhounds finished 1-2 in the women’s 50 free and secured the top three spots in the 100, with Buys winning both event. McCoy, meanwhile, touched first in both the 200 back and 200 IM.

On the men’s side, Christian Hedeen and Serge Ahadzhanian also notched a pair of individual wins; Hedeen the in 500 free and 200 fly and Ahadzhanian in the 200 free and 100 fly.

The UIndy men won both relays, with Joao Silva the only Hound on both the 200 free and 400 medley teams. Anchored by senior Leticia Vaselli, the Greyhound women took first in the 200 free relay with an NCAA provisional time of 1:33.87.

Other notable included the UIndy men accounted for each of the top four finishes in the 50 free, with Diego Mas’ 20.14 leading the way. Meanwhile, junior Brynhildur Traustadottir won the women’s 1650 by nearly 19 seconds.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will use the next week and a half to prep for the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, set for February 8-11 in Evansville, Ind. The UIndy men are the defending champs while the women look to improve on last year’s runner-up finish.
