UCSB Women, BYU Men On Top After Day 1 of MPSF Championships

Day One Results

The first day of swimming came to a close with Santa Barbara on top of the standings in the women’s meet and Brigham Young leading the men. UCSB kicked it off with a 1:40.55 in the 200 medley relay from Cheyenne Low (25.55), Charis Hoppe (27.76), Allie Stevens (24.80), and Kimmie Kreuzberger (22.44). Second place went to Pacific’s Haley Preston, Cristina Mardones, Kenna Ramey, and Vaiva Gimbutyte (1:41.56). UC Davis (Aislinn Dresel, Hailey Ferko, Hilvy Cheung, and Courtney Schultz) took third with 1:41.76.

BYU clocked a 1:26.51 to win the men’s race with Jake Taylor (21.44), Stephen Richards (24.78), Rainer Ng (21.36), and Payton Sorenson (18.93). Pacific was only 3/10 behind with 1:26.80 (Makoa Haneberg, Yahav Shahaff, Jared Vu, and Mitchell Ongstad). Hawaii’s Adam Banks, Paulo Magahales de Paula, Micah Ornelas, and Ryan Makuta came in third with 1:28.72.

Hawaii scored a thrilling come-from-behind win in the women’s 800 free relay with Kira Webster (1:49.78), Cherelle Oestringer (1:49.13), Silvija Djelic (1:49.86), and Franziska Weidner (1:45.98) combining for 7:14.75. Santa Barbara and Davis took second and third with 7:16.57 and 7:19.64, respectively.

In the men’s 800 free relay, both BYU and Pacific came in under the previous meet record time of 6:28.53. Brigham Young’s Taylor (1:35.03), Connor Stirling (1:37.62), Preston Jenkins (1:35.82) and Luis Ventura (1:37.81) got the win and the record with 6:26.28. Pacific (Miles Mackenzie, Georan Meendering, Brandon Presswood, and Curtis Klein) went 6:28.52.
