UCSB Gauchos Roll To Victory At Roadrunner Invite

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.– UCSB men’s and women’s swim has had an exciting two day, ending their time at Bakersfield with a first place team finish at the Roadrunner Invite today. The men finished with 561 points, 197 points ahead of second-place Cal. Baptist University while the women finished with 517.5 points, 173 points ahead of runner-up San Jose State.

Once again the relays were the stars of the show as the men and women took first place in the 400 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay. The men’s Medley Relay, swam by Matthew Driscoll, Alec Cullen, Justin Wong, and Austin Sparrow, finished in 3:19.58. The women’s Medley Relay team consisted of Nina StatlerAshley RaySamantha Banos, and Reagan Nibarger and finished in 3:48.68. Wong, Driscoll, Sparrow, and Sean Gutowski were the 400 Free Relay team which finished in 3:01.11. The women’s 400 Free Relay consisted of Statler, Nibarger, Tyryn Empremsilapa, and Hannah Joseph who finished in 3:29.09.

Individually, the men saw multiple first place finishes: Sparrow in the 200 Free (1:38.24), Driscoll in the 50 Free(21.01), Zachary Dietz in the 200 Back (1:52.40), and Cullen for the 200 Breast(2:00.21). Additionally,  Kyle Bril(2:02.38) and Corban McIntosh(2:04.66) took the second and third spots in the 200 Breast. Driscoll and Dominic Falcon finished second in the 100 IM (50.29) and the 200 Fly (1:49.64) respectively. Gutowski took third in the 50 Free(21.26).

First place finishes for the women include Banos in the 200 Fly (2:03.02), Statler in the 50 Free (23.83) and 100 IM (58.28), and Hazel Derr in the 200 Back (2:01.31). Ray and Banos took second in the 100 IM (58.44) and the 100 Free (52.15) respectively. Nibarger finished third in the 50 Free (24.29).

Going the distance, Maelynn Lawrence took the top spot in the 1000 Free, finishing with a time of 10:28.61. Matt Vinh and Aiden Benjamin took second and third place in the 1000 Free with times of 9:35.78 and 9:46.41, respectively.

Next up, the Gaucho women will return to Campus Pool on Friday, Oct. 21 to face UCLA at 4pm. The next meet for the men will be on Saturday, Nov. 5 against UC San Diego and Pepperdine at Pepperdine.
