SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swim teams earned a dual sweep over Cal Baptist Saturday afternoon at Campus Pool. The men (1-4) picked up their first dual meet win of the season with a decisive 152-102 victory, while the women (2-3) finished with a final score of 149-105.
The Gauchos honored the graduating senior class with a senior day ceremony at the meet, and in return the seniors put on quite a performance. Molly McCance finished first in the 200 Fly (2:03.65) and second in the 100 Free (53.19), Marriott Hoffmann was first in the 50 Free (24.06), and Dora Seggelke touched first in the 100 Fly (56.53). Maya Lee contributed a second-place victory in the 400 IM (4:30.26) and a third in the 1000 Free (10:43.89).
Kian Brouwer was first to finish in the 100 Fly (50.07) and third in the 200 Free (1:41.78), Tim Lee finished second in the 50 Free, and Ethan Archer added third-place finishes in the 100 (51.28) and 200 Back (1:53.69).
On the women’s side, sophomore Reagan Nibarger had yet another impressive performance, finishing first in both the 100 (53.19) and 200 Free (1:55.06). Freshman Kristin Bartlett had her strongest performance of the year, finishing first in both the 100 (58.45) and 200 Back (2:05.11). Maelynn Lawrence had a first-place finish in the 500 Free (5:08.33) and touched second in both the 1000 Free (10:37.79) and 200 Fly (2:05.97). Freshmen Tyryn Empremsilapa and Michelle Tekawy contributed first-place wins of their own, Empremsilapa in the 100 Breast (1:06.18) and Tekawy in both the 200 Breast (2:23.19) and 400 IM (4:30.02).
Gillian Flath and Hannah Joseph each had second and third-place finishes, while Paige Gambetta added a second-place win. Sydney Rouse, Katie Nugent, and Katie Ryan each had third-place finishes. The 50 Free saw Santa Barbara take the top four spots. The women also snagged all the top three spots in the 400 Medley Relay to kick off the meet, including the “A” team of Bartlett, Nugent, Seggelke, and Hoffmann taking first in 3:54.36.
On the men’s side, freshmen Kyle Brill, Taber daCosta, Austin Sparrow, and Matt Driscoll combined for eight first-place wins. Brill finished first in the 100 Back (50.21), 200 Breast (2:04.39), and 400 IM (4:02.39), daCosta in the 500 (4:42.98) and 1000 Free (9:36.28), Sparrow in the 100 (1:39.04) and 200 Free (45.87), and Driscoll in the 200 Back (1:52.17).
Kennan Hotchkiss contributed second-place wins in the 500 (4:47.30) and 1000 Free (9:39), while Will Schodorf finished third in the same events (4:47.30 and 9:39.76). Sophomore Shogo Moridaira took first in the 100 Breast (57.65) and third in the 200 Breast (2:06.50). Christopher Roling added a second-place finish in the 200 Fly (1:56.27), while Jude DiStefano and Justin Wong each had third-place finishes.
The strongest events for the men were the 200 Fly and 1000 Free, both of which saw the Gauchos take the top three spots. Santa Barbara’s 400 Medley Relay “A” team of Driscoll, Corban McIntosh, Lee, and Sparrow earned a first-place win in 3:22.08.
The Gauchos will return to action next weekend, as the women head to UC Davis on January 21 for a 2:00 PM matchup and both the men and women take on Pacific January 22 for an away meet at 12:00 PM.

WESTWOOD & SANTA BARBARA – The California Baptist University swim and dive teams were back in action Saturday, but found themselves competing separately in Southern California as the divers continued on with their UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational and the swimmers made the trip to UC Santa Barbara to dual with the Gauchos.
DIVING
The second day of the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational saw California Baptist divers make finals and have strong showings against a tough field of competitors. CBU again faced a field with some of the top diving talent in the nation from schools such as USC, Stanford, Wyoming, UNLV, UCSD, Nebraska, UCLA, Fresno State and San Diego State.
Evan Honer claimed a third-place finish in the men’s platform event with a finals score of 328.45. This mark lifted him onto the podium ahead of two-time platform All-American Ethan Foster from Stanford. Jacob Penman continued his run of success by recording one of the highest scoring dives of the day, eclipsing the 60-point mark with his 5235D, on his way to a ninth-place finish.
Freshman Paula De Moya Alvarez made the cut from prelims to finals in the women’s 3-meter springboard event, posting a score of 240.25. She went on to improve on her prelim score, recording a 269.45 to earn a 16th place finish. Veteran Kiree Lowe closed the prelims just 3.5 points short of a spot in the finals, but earned a 19th place finish ahead of fellow WAC divers from UNLV and nationally recognized opponents from the Pac-12, Big Ten and Mountain West schools.
SWIMMING
The results from CBU’s first-ever trip to Santa Barbara were full of near hits with the Lancers claiming seven total wins on the day.
Giulia Decataldo led the day off with a win in the 1,000 yard freestyle, touching in 10 minutes and 31.47 seconds. Decataldo nearly swept the women’s distance races, coming in second in the 500 free in 5:08.52, just .19 of a second behind first place. The Lancer women swept the top spots in three other races, including the 200-free relay.
Patricia Van Law hit the trifecta on Saturday, finishing third in the 100 backstroke (1:01.62), second in the 200 back in (2:09.60) and winning the 400 individual medley (4:35.80). That IM race saw Lancers abound as Amber Harris (4:51.15) and Lynn Henke (4:59.27) rounded out the top-three.
Vianka Hoyer (59.85) took top billing in the 100 butterfly with Amber French (1:00.28) and Harris (1:00.87) close behind in second and third. Faith Brazil notched a pair of runner-up finishes with the 100 and 200 breaststroke races in 1:07.20 and 2:23.94, respectively.
The men swept the same events, with Brendan Man (51.64) claiming the 100 fly crown and Robert Moseley (4:15.27) winning the 400 IM. Moseley would add runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 back, touching the wall in 51.09 and 1:52.31, respectively.
Remi Fabiani also earned a pair of second-place finishes on the day, claiming silver in the 200 free in a time of 1:40.24 and the 100 free in 46.77.
UP NEXT
The third and final day of competition at the Bruin Diving Invitational will see the men on the 3-meter springboard while the women move up to the platform. Admission to Spieker Aquatics Center is free for those looking to attend Sunday’s preliminary rounds at 10:30 a.m. or final round in the afternoon.
