UC San Diego Women Split With UC Davis, Earn Key Big West Win

DAVIS, Calif. –  The No. T-8 UC San Diego women’s water polo team split their double header with No. 10 UC Davis on April 10 at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Tritons won game one 11-7 and fell 8-11 in the second non-conference game. UC San Diego is now 8-4 and remains perfect in Big West play at 3-0. UC Davis sits at 9-5 and 2-2 in Big West play.

GAME ONE
The Tritons took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter with Annika Arroyo, Sydney Boland and Tera Richardson all scoring a goal. The five-on-six defense played well and held the Aggies scoreless on their four power play opportunities.

The second quarter was all Tritons as Arroyo scored three straight goals and Grace Pevehouse added a goal to go up 7-2. Noelle Wijnbelt would score in the final minute for Davis to break the Triton’s scoring run.

Back-to-back goals from Pevehouse made it a 9-3 lead in the third quarter and their largest of the game. The Aggies would come within four goals late in the game, but the Tritons drained the clock to take the win.

GAME TWO
UC Davis took an early 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game but back-to-back goals from Boland and Arroyo tied the game up. Ryan Sund scored on a power play for UC Davis with a little over a minute left in the quarter to reclaim the lead.

Pevehouse would tie the game up with a goal in the second quarter. With a little over thirty seconds left in the quarter, UC Davis took advantage of a power play to take back the lead. On the following possession, Arroyo took the feed from Ciara Franke and equalized to make it a 4-4 game.

The Aggies outscored the Tritons 6-1 in the third quarter to take a 10-5 lead. Goals from Arroyo and Holly Maine chipped away at the Aggies lead in the fourth quarter. The Tritons came up empty in the next couple possessions with several turnovers and could not make up the deficit.

“I’m very proud of our team for bouncing back like this after having a setback this past week due to a 10-day quarantine,” stated Head Coach Brad Kreutzkamp. “We came out strong in the first game and had good energy throughout the entire game. We carried that energy into the first half of the second game but lost some steam in the third quarter. Our depth and ability to play solid defense kept us steady the whole first game. We played sharp and I couldn’t be happier that we are taking it to every competitor in this conference.”

TRITON TIDBITS

• Arroyo led the Tritons in scoring with seven goals between two games. Pevehouse was second with five goals.
• Bennett Bugelli had double-digit saves in both games with 11 in the first and 12 in the second.
• Tritons picked up their first win against the Aggies since 2013.
