After helping his nation of Singapore win gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay on night 1 of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Olympian Joseph Schooling came up .06 short of individual gold in the men’s 50m fly on day 2.
The 24-year-old former Texas Longhorn produced a morning effort of 24.23 to claim the 2nd seed heading into tonight’s final, sitting only behind teammate Tzen Wei Teong‘s morning effort of 23.92.
During the final battle in New Clark City, however, it was Teong who got his hand on the wall first, with the 22-year-old producing a lifetime best of 23.55. That edged out Schooling by just .06, with the 100m fly Olympic champion touching in 23.61 for silver.
Schooling owns the 50m fly national record with the 22.93 he put up at the 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships. He won gold at the 2017 edition of these SEA Games in a time of 23.06, establishing the current Games Record in the process.

Additional Winners on Day 2:
- Huy Hoang Nguyen earned his 2nd gold of these Games, touching in 14:58.14 for a new meet record in the men’s 1500m free. He topped the field by over 16 seconds to give Vietnam a new national record.
- The women’s 50m back saw Elena Pedersen get it done in her debut Games. The Singaporean clocked a winning effort of 29.40.
- Vietnam’s Nguyen Hung Tran was successful in the men’s 200m IM, clocking 2:02.56 to get the edge over Singapore’s Darren Chua and his runner-up mark of 2:02.73.
- The foursome of Gan Ching Hwee, Quah Ting Wen, Quah Jing Wen and Christie May Chue took the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay for Singapore, establishing a new meet record of 8:07.00 in the process.
- Chue also took the women’s 200m breast, clocking a winning effort of 2:28.71.

Oof. If this is his 50 fly, his 100 is going to be a nightmare (for him). Wouldn’t be surprised if he developed a tummy ache before it.

I’m gonna anticipate all people who, somehow, still believe this is the pinnacle of irony on SwimSwam: the jokes about Schooling beating WR in practice stopped being funny about 2.5 years ago.
