Two new Trials cuts highlight night 2 of Pacific Northwest Senior Champs

A pair of swimmers earned U.S. Olympic Trial cuts on Friday night of the Pacific Northwest Senior Long Course Championships.

The first came in the men’s 100 breast, where recent Cal-Poly grad Jimmy Deiparine went 1:03.10 for the event win. Prior to today, Deiparine’s best was just 1:04.46, per USA Swimming’s database, and the drop of more than a full second earned him an Olympic Trials cut. Deiparine swims for Bellevue.

Just one event later, KING Aquatic Club’s Heidi VanderWel topped the women’s 100 back in a new Trials cut of her own, a 1:02.59.

According to USA Swimming, that’s her best swim in the event since the last Olympic Trials in 2012, where she went 1:02.90, and it’s the first time she’s been under the Trials cut since the qualifying period opened last summer.

VanderWel’s KING teammate Kenna Ramey won the women’s 50 free in a lifetime-best 26.57. That inches her closer to the Olympic Trials cut, which is now just four tenths away.

The men’s 50 free went much the same way, with KING’s Zachary Wagner going 23.62, shaving two tenths off his best and getting to within a half-second of the Trials cut.

15-year-old Chloe Limargo was among the night’s youngest winners, going 5:08.95 to win the 400 IM. That’s a drop of over 10 seconds from her lifetime-best.

Fordham University’s rising senior Steve Sholdra won the men’s race, going 4:34.86. He would earn two individual wins on the night, coming back later on to take the men’s 400 free in 4:04.89.

Other individual winners:

  • Bellevue’s Sage Speak won the women’s 100 breast, going 1:12.98.
  • The men’s 100 back went to KING 17-year-old Cole Avery at 58.52.
  • Bellevue 16-year-old Christina Domanowski took the women’s 400 free in 4:23.07.
