2018 ESSZ Sr Summer Long Course Championship
- July 5-8th
- Tupelo Aquatic Center, Tupelo, MS
- Long Course Meters
- Hosted By Shockwave Aquatic Team
- Thursday Finals Results
The Tupelo Speedo Sectional Meet kicked off on Thursday, July 5th. There is something unusual about this meet however: it has extremely low attendance, like, so low that there’s only 4 or 5 swimmers per event. In the meet information that was sent out to the participating teams, host Shockwave Aquatic Club stated that they talked to USA Swimming, and decided to go forward with the meet, even with the low attendance. They came up with a way to format the meet that “should provide fast swims in unique situations”. Since there’s only 1 heat of each event, they added a 30 minute break after each men’s event.
17 year old Richard Nichol of Memphis Tiger Swim Club took the men’s 200 fly with a 2:07.34. That time marked a 5.5 second drop from his previous best of 2:12.83. He took the race out fast, hitting the 100 mark at 59.87, then came home in 1:07.47.

We talked about this at my daughter’s meet this morning. So you’re fast enough for Sectionals but not Futures or Nationals, are you as a swimmer going to want to focus and spend the resources for your big travel/championship meet the second weekend of July? Makes for a short summer. My daughter’s team decided to focus on different meets (Futures and Zones) instead of sending a team to Sectionals like they usually do.
I wonder if swimmers are splitting the lanes for warm up, or are there lanes that have three swimmers warming up?
Besides warm up lanes being assigned to teams, I wonder if showers and lavatory stalls are also?
In spite of the lack of participation, the swimmers at this meet worked hard to get here, we have had JR national cuts and pool records set at this meet. We are proud of the swimmers here.
Wow, USA-S may need to get involved in the bid processing for ESSZ next time. Thats got to be an awful meet for all those who expected any competition.
Air quality has been a big issue in the past, if I remember correctly. They hosted Southern Senior Zones a couple years ago, and the air quality still wasn’t great after work to improve it. I don’t recall that meet having great attendance, either.
Fewer swimmers => fewer people peeing in the pool
Hospitality room will be breeze! Just pick up 2 medium pizzas, a bag of Ruffles, a couple bananas and call it a day!
One has to wonder if there are enough parents at the meet to time…?
I’ve hosted sectionals. Usually for these meets, the officials requirement and roster is huge. How many deck officials are at this meet? Starter on one side of the pool, ref on the other, walking the deck and doing S&T like a high school meet.
The swimmers in the next event must be the timers.
Hospitality is bar none the best you will ever experience
Made to order omelettes, waffles, pancakes for breakfast. Ribs, Sausage, Chicken for hors d’ouvres.
The locals have been great
In fact, attendance was so low that they had to include women’s volleyball by linking the final results to the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League tournament …
Who wants to go to Mississippi is the real question lol
Obviously you have never been to Tupelo, Probably the friendliest City I have ever visited.
