Paul Stafford, well-known as the coach of California’s Terrapins Swim Team, will move to Arizona to take over Tucson Ford Aquatics, the team announced via Twitter tonight.

Stafford has coached a number of big-time athletes while with the Terrapins, including now-USC sophomore Chelsea Chenault and rising butterfly sensation Justin Lynch. Stafford helped start the Terrapins back in 1989.

He’ll take over for departed Johno Fergusson, the South African coach who resigned back in August. Tucson is another very high-profile club, one of the top organizations in Arizona. It also boasts a strong pro contingent that includes Olympic champ Matt Grevers and is the summer club for most of the University of Arizona’s top athletes.

My only question is why did he leave after 20+ years. Can’t seem to find any information as to why he left or the circumstances. Seems like a great coach and Ford will benefit greatly.

The Terrapins owe him so much. One of the most influential personalities in the sport. I’m glad to see him have a healthy change of scenery!

Couldn’t be happier for you Paul! Our loss is Arizona’s gain. Best of luck.

GREAT hire! Paul probably has coached more age group swimmers in the last couple decades that have become stud senior swimmers than anyone in the country!
