Trio of Aussie Open Water Swimmers Qualify for 2017 World Championship

Following the Abu Dhabi FINA World Cup which took place earlier this month, Swimming Australia announced via press release that they have nominated three swimmers to compete in the 10k event in Budapest at the 2017 World Championships.

According to Swimming Australia, “Following on from their successful performances at the Abu Dhabi FINA World Cup earlier this month, Chelsea Gubecka, Kareena Lee and new comer Jack Brazier will now join Jarrod Poort (5km), Jack McLoughlin (5km) and Kiah Melverton (5km) on the Australian Dolphins Swim Team for the open water events.”

Gubecka, who finished 15th in the 2016 Rio Olympics 10km race as just a 17 year old, finished fifth in the women’s 10k in Abu Dhabi in a time of 1:52.37.30. Gubecka will be joined by teammate Kareena Lee, who finished 11th at the World Cup after narrowly missing out on qualifying for Rio. Lee placed 20th in the 10k at the 2015 World Championships but was hospitalized due to asthma shortly following the event and withdrew from her remaining events at the meet. Additionally, Jack Brazier will make his World Championships debut for Australian Dolphins after finishing twelfth in the men’s 10k event clocking a 1:46.06.70.

The remainder of the 2017 Australian World Championships Swimming Team will be selected at the 2017 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships which will take place in early April.

The 2017 World Championships will take place in Budapest, Hungary from July 23rd-July 30th.
