Florida high school swimming is starting to heat up, with the two small-school classes running district meets last weekend. Here’s a rapid-fire look at some of the more notable district meets:
Trinity Prep, Montverde Trade Blows in District 1A-4
Just a few weeks after breaking several national high school records in short course meters, the girls of Trinity Prep were back to outlast a tough Montverde squad in a fast District 4 meet in class 1A.
Junior Claire Maiocco, who broke the national short course meter 100 fly record in early October, hit an automatic All-America time of 54.32 to win the 100 fly and advance to the regional level. She was also part of the Trinity Prep 200 medley relay, which hit an All-America consideration time of 1:46.35.
Montverde’s Katie Schorr also got an early leg up on the All-America cuts, hitting an automatic time of 23.28 in the 50 free and a consideration time of 51.35 in the 100 free.
Ciesla, Tjon-A-Joe Shine in 1A-11
In the smallest schools division (Class 1A), Pine Crest’s Marta Ciesla and Westlake Prep’s Raiz Tjon-A-Joe were the big hitters.
Ciesla, the defending state champ in the 50 and 100 frees, won four races – an individual and three relays. Her 23.01 in the 50 is an automatic All-America time.
Meanwhile Tjon-A-Joe, a senior, went 20.56 to win the 50 free and 55.25 for the 100 breast. Both are automatic All-America bids.
Bolles School Wins 23 of 24 Events in 1A-2
Defending boys and girls state champs in class 1A, the Bolles School Sharks dropped just a single event in winning district 2.
On the boys side, Andy Song An won twice, taking the 200 free (1:45.10) and 100 back (51.27). For the girls, Olga Lapteva took two individual events, the 200 IM (2:11.71) and 100 breast (1:06.34).
The only non-Bolles winner was Providence’s Victoria Fonville, who went 24.17 in the 50 free.
American Heritage Seniors Defending State Title in 2A-11
The defending class 2A state champs on the boys side, American Heritage picked up the win in district 11.
That was led by wins in all 3 relays and individual doubles from seniors Julien Pinon and Jonathan Farah.
Pinon took the 200 free (1:42.35) and 100 fly (51.37) while Farah won the 200 IM (1:59.13) and 100 back (55.48).
Youngsters Leading Gulliver Prep Defense in 2A-12
The defending 2A girls champs are getting production from the opposite end of the roster, with underclassmen coming up big in district 12.
8th-grader Andrea Santander and freshman Emily Cordovi each won a pair of individual races to lead Gulliver Prep. Santander was 23.97 in the 50 free and 53.16 in the 100 free; Cordovi won the 100 fly in 57.85 and the 100 back in 1:00.26.
Also winning multiple events were seniors Niki Urquidi (200 free, 500 free) and Kelly Fertel (200 IM, 100 breast).
